It was almost afternoon when Wangji heard a knock on his door. He called out for the person to come in. The door opened, and not just one person entered but four more followed closely behind. The first to step in was Lan Jingyi, who looked somewhat worried, and then came the entire Lan family.
Wangji looked up as he sensed their presence. He immediately stood and bowed respectfully to greet them. Once everyone settled on the couches, Jingyi quietly served tea for them.
Wangji had been the one to call this meeting, informing them it was an urgent matter concerning him that he needed to discuss.
"Wangji, why did you call all of us? What's the matter?" Mr. Lan asked, his tone calm yet curious.
"I need to talk about my boyfriend, the one I mentioned to you earlier," Wangji explained, his gaze briefly meeting his brother's. Lan Xichen gave him an encouraging nod, silently showing his support for whatever Wangji was about to share.
"Oh, what happened, dear? Is he okay?" Mrs. Lan asked, worry etched on her face as she moved to sit beside her son.
"Yes, Mom, he’s absolutely fine. I just wanted to tell you about him," Wangji reassured her with a soft smile.
"We would love to know about this person," Lan Qiren interjected, his tone formal and stern. "And we will need to ensure he comes from a good family, especially since you’ve already rejected one of the proposals I carefully arranged for you in favor of this boy."
Wangji’s expression didn’t falter as he prepared himself for what was to come.
“To tell you all, you already know this boy. It’s Wei Wuxian, Uncle Wei Changze’s son,” Wangji announced. Everyone's expressions turned to shock, except Lan Xichen, who was already aware of the situation.
After a brief silence, Mr. Lan spoke, “Then there’s nothing to worry about. Changze’s son is an excellent choice. I’m happy for you.”
“Yes! That boy is truly beautiful. I would love to meet him. You should bring him to our mansion tomorrow, A’Zhan,” Mrs. Lan added excitedly.
“It’s not that simple,” Wangji sighed. “Wei Ying doesn’t know who I am.”
“What?” Lan Qiren said, visibly confused. “What do you mean? How can he not know who you are yet still be in a relationship with you? I don’t understand.”
“Yes, A’Zhan, please explain yourself. Relationships are not a joke. You understand that, right?” Lan Qinghengjun added in a firm tone.
Wangji took a deep breath and began explaining everything, from his initial anonymous messages to becoming Wei Ying’s boyfriend. “And he still doesn’t know that Lan Wangji and Lan Zhan are the same person. Tomorrow, on his birthday, I will meet him as Lan Zhan and explain everything.”
“Oh, dear! I hope that boy understands everything,” Mrs. Lan said, her voice laced with concern. “You have to treat him well, A’Zhan. Lying, even by omission, can cause significant damage to relationships and lead to misunderstandings.”
“That’s why we forbid lying,” Lan Qiren added with his usual stern expression. “Even if you didn’t lie directly, withholding the truth is still considered deceitful.”
“I’m sorry for my actions. I won’t repeat this behavior,” Wangji said, his expression filled with guilt.
“Save your apologies for that innocent boy,” Qinghengjun said, standing up and straightening his coat. “We will only forgive you when he does.”
The rest of the family rose to leave. As they prepared to depart, Qinghengjun turned back with a slight grin. “We’ll be at the birthday party tomorrow. I’ll inform Changze that we’ll soon be family. After all, we’re about to become in-laws.”
