Wei Ying was walking back from the hallway when he ran into Xui Ren. She stopped in her tracks the moment she saw him, her eyes widening slightly in surprise before she masked it with a graceful smile. She composed herself quickly and walked toward him with theatrical calmness.
Wei Ying immediately sensed trouble. He had mentally prepared himself for her biting words her tone always wrapped cruelty in sugar. But he had no intention of giving her the reaction she sought.
“Oh… Wei Wuxian, right?” she said, pretending to recall his name dramatically.
Wei Ying gave a short nod and was about to move past her, but she stepped directly into his path, blocking him.
“Ah, ah, where are you going? I’m talking to you,” she said with a mock-scolding scoff. “So disrespectful!”
Then she tilted her head and sighed. “But I get it. You’re probably dealing with heartbreak right now. Poor thing. I’m so sorry about it.” She said the words slowly, her tone soaked in false sympathy.
Wei Ying stared at her blankly.
“But you know,” she continued, now speaking slower, more directly, “I did warn you. This was bound to happen. You were just… an entertainment piece. Something new. Something fun. But fun doesn’t last forever. He got bored. He moved on.”
She leaned in, her voice dropping to a cold whisper near his ear.
“And now? His blood is inside me. He has to choose what’s meant for him.”
Wei Ying turned to look at her, face unreadable, lips pressed into a line. He said nothing.
Ren leaned back and smiled sweetly. “Anyway, thank you for attending our engagement. I hope you enjoy the show.”
Wei Ying smiled faintly not out of warmth, but quiet defiance.
“Ohhh… so it’s an engagement party?” he said, voice light with surprise. “I didn’t know that. Seems like no one else does either.”
Ren’s smile faltered for a brief second.
“It’s a surprise, obviously,” she said quickly, regaining her confidence. “They’ll announce it soon. Just wait. You’ll see.”
“Hmm… then let’s see what it’s really about,” he replied calmly, tapping her shoulder before walking away and returning to his family’s table.
Just then, Lan Zhan walked into the garden, composed and elegant as ever. The guests stirred, turning their heads as the soft music faded and the lights adjusted toward the stage.
Lan Quinghenjun stepped up with a microphone, his face dignified, voice clear and commanding.
“Ladies and gentlemen, may I have your attention please,” he began, glancing around the crowd. “Today, we are gathered here for a very special occasion... one many of you may be wondering about…”
A quiet ripple of curiosity and murmuring moved through the guests.
Wei Ying, sitting down with Jiang Cheng and his family, watched with steady eyes.
Ren, standing off to the side, straightened her posture, lips already curling in anticipation.
And Lan Zhan… stood still, hands folded neatly in front of him, eyes scanning the crowd until they landed on one person.
Wei Ying. He softly looked at him and again paid attention towards his father's voice.
“So, before we move ahead with the big announcement,” Mr. Lan said from the stage, “I would like to call my son, Lan Wangji, up here.”
He turned with a firm voice. “Wangji!”
