Sam had the night to himself. He didn't think he'd fall asleep, but his dreams seemed to prove him wrong. "Cairo? Cairo, are you paying attention?" The little necro looked up at his father. "I am, I swear." Gaster sighed and tutted gently. "You must always be vigilant, son. The enemy could be around any bend, and you have a family to protect." Cairo gave him an ultimately confused look. "But it's just you, father. Would it not be easier to say 'I have a father to protect?" Gaster shook his skull and pulled his sachel over to rummage through it. Finally, he pulled out a box. "Your mother is with me too. As long as I am around and her dust is with us, we will always be a family." Gaster explained as he tucked her away into the sachel. Something glimmered in Cairo's sockets as he nodded in understanding. "I will protect you and mother with my life!" Cairo promised. "Just don't forget to be my son, as well... the way you were born to be." The necro nodded again. "We will be, father. We will not let you down." Sam and Cairo both promised.

"papyrus and i were born in the lab... created from her dust and dad's magic with a little bit of science sprinkled in." Sans words echoed in Sam's mind, even as he woke up. Her dust. His mother's dust was used to create Sans and Papyrus. That's why he wasn't released from the spell. But as he started to slip into awareness, his revelation started to slip away like sand between his fingers. For a moment, he was left wondering what he was thinking about before shrugging it off to get breakfast. He was awake even before Papyrus, which honestly didn't really surprise him. Soldiers were always awake before civilians, even if it was by only an hour. Still, he had French Toast made up by the time he came downstairs, carrying a practically asleep Sans with him. "Brothers, hey, just in time to get in on the action!" Sam set down plates stacked with their breakfast before going to get the toppings. There was mixed fruit, chocolate chips, syrup, and powdered sugar. "WHY THANK YOU, BROTHER! YOU DIDN'T HAVE TO!" Papyrus plopped Sans in a seat while he took his own. "No worries, man, I was up anyway." Sam waved it off as he sat himself.

Papyrus took the healthy route, topping his breakfast with the mixed fruit while Sans chose the alternative route, spreading chocolate chips, syrup, powdered sugar, and even whipped cream on top. Sam was relatively plain in his approach to breakfast, using the traditional syrup to add a bit of flavor to the spiced eggy toast. "Mm! This Is Wonderful, Cairo, Thank You! Er, Or Do I Call You Sam?" Papyrus asked ponderously. "Either works, lil bro. I am both, so I answer to either." He shrugged and took another bite of his meal. "for everyone else's sakes, let's call him as we see him. sam when he's in human form and cairo when he's in skeleton." Sans told Papyrus as he inhaled a whole piece of diabetes. "Wait, can skeletons get diabetes?" Sans shrugged smuggly. Papyrus elbowed him. "No, We Cannot, But Still, That Cannot Be Healthy, Sans-" Papyrus started to rant about Sans health and Sam chuckled. This was nice, not eating alone. Being with family. He was gonna stick around and enjoy this until the day they figured out how to release his souls back to the afterlife.
