Sam was enjoying the pie. Tori made good pie. What he wasn't enjoying was the conversation. Mostly, it was about after the war and how he'd survived the purging years after the barrier went up. He was honest about it - he mostly hadn't. He'd died multiple times in the purging years until he finally got the hang of swapping out souls. He tried not to go into too much detail about that first month. The ravine. The way the wild animals fed off his flesh and bones. That first month still haunted his dreams. Sam reminded them of why they were all there. "We are looking for ways to free my souls, guys. Any ideas?" It was Alphys that spoke up first, in little stutters. "A-actually, I was th-thinking about it... and you s-said this Gaster p-person was e-erased from existence?" Sam raised a curious brow but nodded. "Yeah. That's what I was told." Alphys continued. "But he n-never died. S-so as long as he's o-outside of existence, y-you to will r-remain." Sans tensed as he realized what Alphys was getting at. "you're saying we gotta free gaster to free sam and cairo..."

Sam didn't know what was going through Sans head, but he wasn't sure Sans liked the idea of Gaster coming back. Papyrus had no qualms with it, however, bouncing excitedly on his toes. "OH MY STARS, CAN WE DO THAT?!" Sam had a feeling it was more about meeting his father than helping him out, but that was fine. It was probably something he always wanted to do. Well, ever since he learned he had a father, anyway. "I imagine that if you free this, Dr. Gaster, he may know a back door to the contract." Toriel was saying, and Alphys was nodding along. "That's the h-hope..." Sans finally piped up from where he'd sat quietly. "if yer serious about saving gaster, i think i have something that might help.... something that i never got to finish, but maybe... maybe you could..." Sans looked at Sam and only at same. "we're gonna set your soul free, bro." It was a solumn promise, one that Sam knew Sans intended to keep. Papyrus cheered and squished Sans into a hug. "THANK YOU, BROTHER! But... What Is It?" Sans smirked a little. "ready for your second trip underground, sam?"

Apparently, this time, they were going deeper Underground than the King's Castle. Sam was just as prone to getting car sick as Cairo, which was great, but with a little healing magic, the necro was ready to get going again. Sam got the pleasure of seeing more of New Home and the C.O.R.E that Gaster had apparently built to power the entire Underground, which was, frankly, impressive. Sam knew Cairo's father was a scientist, but just wow. They stopped in the lab for an instant Ramen break and Sam got to do a little Exploring before they went out into Hotland to see if the boat was still there. "riv? why you still here?" Sans asked as the Riverperson stood loyally in their boat. "Tra la la, to give visitors rides." That was how they bypassed Waterfall to make it to Snowdin. Sam wasn't quite expecting the cold and he shuttered as they got off and followed Sans to a house, or more specifically, behind it. From there Sans unlocked the door and lead them down to a tarp covered machine. "ladies and bros, welcome to my little workshop. we can save gaster from here."
