Before he knew it, it was time. The stabilizer was the size and shape of a Lego piece. So small Cairo was genuinely afraid he was going to lose it before he could get it on their father. Thus, he gripped on tightly, the cold square biting into bone while Undyne helped get a climbing vest on. Papyrus, claiming to be the best at knots, was tying on the rope. "remember, tug once if you're in trouble. twice if you got him. we'll help ya out." Cairo nodded. "I remember, Sans. I will get him." His death was depending on it. Alphys booted up the repaired machine, her claws flying over keys and switches as she prepared to tear a hole into the Void. The hole itself was more like a door. It started as a spark and a thin line of black that just appeared near the machine. Rising up til it seemed big enough, then widening out like a giant, maw sparks danced around the edges where reality met non-existence, and Cairo didn't hesitate. They only had so much time, and he couldn't afford to waste it staring. He went in and focused on feeling for Gaster.

Non-existence was absence. Absence of color, absence of shape, absence of mass. Pure dark, darker than dark. Absolute nothing. No floor, no ceiling, no walls. Cairo tried not to focus on that. Only the single feeling that remained. The faintest tug at his soul, telling him his father was here. He followed it. Like a moth to flame, his soul guided. As he moved, he became partially aware that the darkness was trying to consume him. The color was draining, out of his clothes, his bones, his magic. Cairo stubbornly refused, letting his integrity flare out and push the darkness back. It couldn't and wouldn't have him. He was backed by Sam's natural occurring determination, turning his blue magic purple as he pressed forward. Purple flared up in response. Far in the distance like a flickering light. The tug got stronger. Cairo started running. The purple got larger, white surrounded it. Gaster didn't look like himself. His body was consumed. The blackness was like tar and smoke at once. The purple flicker was his magic crying for help. He seemed to be in some sort of stasis. Cairo acted fast, plunging the Lego stabilize deep into the black until it latched onto something solid. Then he ripped his arm out before it could consume him, too.

Two tugs. They guided him back, as promised. Carrying Gaster made it feel like he was underwater, and yet the sludge and smoke were actively dripping off of him. Gaster wasn't limp in his hold, but he wasn't lucid either. He stared ahead, his magic flickering in a war against the Void he'd been fighting for years. Only when the door came into sight did Gaster suddenly seem to get heavier. Cairo became well aware of gravity taking control once more and braced as he strode closer and closer still, almost breaking into a run. Especially seeing that the door was considerably smaller. He'd have to duck to get through. That was ok, though, because he preferred light and color over pure, all-consuming absence. And after being in there so long, it was almost too bright coming through. Gaster made his first sound since Cairo had picked him up. The scientist recoiled with a hiss, shifting around to cover his sockets. It was really the first movement he'd made, too. Cairo also flinched away, closing his sockets. "Bright -" Yet, despite that, the sounds he heard were ones of relief. He was relieved.
