It felt like forever, which amused Sam because he actually knew what forever felt like. Being alive as long as he was and being unable to die, he literally could live forever, bound by Gaster's contract. Yet, the mortals liked to say that a lot. 'It felt like forever." He supposed they had a point, though. Anxiety was a strange thing. It had the power to actually make him feel like he'd lived a thousand lifetimes already in the hour that Asgore took to talk to his brothers. Sam paced the length of his cell at least a thousand times in his wait before Asgore finally came in. "Necro, I have a question for you." He wanted to say he didn't have time for questions and that he wanted to know if Sans and Papyrus were ok, but he held his tongue for their sake, leaning up against the cell bars. "Shoot." Sam said instead, crossing his arms in a resting position. "What was your contract? What keeps you bound to this world?" The king asked. That? That was easy enough. "My contractor bound my soul to their lives. As long as he and his wife live, I'm stuck."

Asgore paused thoughtfully. "Who is your contractor?" Oh great. Sam took a deep breath and went to sit down. It seemed interrogations were back on. "His name was Dr. WD Gaster, but according to your skeleton buddies, he's dead and gone. The wife, too, so by all means, I should be free, yet I'm not. I don't know if my curse extends to children or what. I was kinda separated from him when the barrier went up, so..." Asgore hummed in thought. "The name sounds unfamiliar to me..." Sam could've told him that. Sans had let him know Gaster was erased from the timeline and all others. "You see now, why I'm looking for another way to free my souls? I'm tired and Cairo is tired. We want rest... we want to move on, Asgore..." Asgore sighed. "Your original form was supposed to be the skeleton, yes? Cairo. Which tells me that your contractor was a skeleton in the war. There was truth to your lie, wasn't there? Your contractor was trying to repopulate his dying species." Asgore couldn't have been farther from the truth. Gaster's reasons were purely selfish to get his son back. "I guess so." Sam shrugged. "Guess maybe that is why Cairo was drawn to the bros."

It was decreed a couple weeks later that Sam had no ill intent. He was to be closely guarded by Undyne at all times, though, just in case. Toriel and Frisk were there already, presumably setting up for Sam's freedom. "You know, it's kinda freaky you were that dead kid. How does that even work?" Undyne asked as they exited the car to go inside. "Well, my body is six feet under in that cemetery. My soul, however, is bound to this body. My flesh and stuff? It's more like some projection of how I could've looked as an adult." Sam replied. As soon as they came in, they scared the crap outta Sam, who looked ready to throw hands as they jumped out, screaming, "SURPRISE!" Papyrus lifted Sam in a Squish hug while Sans looked apologetic. "i tried to warn 'em..." as soon as Sam was put down, they pinched him. "Ow-" He looked at the kid in confusion. "I wanted to feel if you were really human." Frisk stated. "I'm not, it's just my magic projecting a human form til my skele soul is fixed..." Toriel came in with plates and pie in tow. "Come, Frisk, leave the poor man alone. Let's eat and discuss how to best help you, Samuel."
