You felt a chill run down your spine as the gunshot echoed through the air, snapping you back to reality. The festive atmosphere, so warm just moments ago, now seemed distant. You quickly glanced around, instincts kicking in, as the crew began to shift—Ace immediately standing up, his hand instinctively shielding you from the impending danger.
"Stay close." Ace said, his voice low and serious. The lightheartedness in his tone was gone, replaced with a quiet urgency.
Loki's ears perked up, his golden eyes narrowing with intensity as he stood beside you, his body language becoming taut and alert. A low, rumbling growl vibrated in his chest, signaling his awareness of someone nearby. The tension in the air grew thick as he shifted slightly, ready to protect and defend.
"MARINES!"
One of the crewmembers shouted, pointing at the incoming marines closing in from all sides. The crew quickly readied themselves for battle, pulling out their weapons. You, too, grabbed your Athame, the cold steel resting against your thigh, your grip steady as you prepared for what was to come.
[Author: I'd like to interrupt this chapter to give a shout-out to @UnknownWren for providing the correct or better term for the dagger. Now, let's get back to the story.]
Before any of you could react, the area around you began to shift. The forest... started glitching? It was as if someone had cast an illusion spell, distorting the very fabric of the surroundings. You recognized the magic immediately and braced yourself for the worst.
"What the!? The forest is acting so weird!" One of the crewmembers shouted, panic creeping into their voice.
Just as quickly as the chaos had started, the marines vanished—gone in an instant. You barely had time to process the sudden change before, with another blink, everything went eerily silent.
You were completely alone. No crewmates. No marines. Just the forest, now unnervingly still, as if the world had shifted and left you behind.
"Shit!" You muttered under your breath, eyes scanning the empty forest around you. 'Should I cast my staff out?' The thought crossed your mind, but it felt too risky. Illusion magic was tricky—it messed with the minds of those around you, distorting their perceptions.
