"Large ass alligator there."
"You sure? I think it's a crocodile..."
"How should I know? I haven't seen those types of reptiles for a long time."
You and Loki stared at the massive, pyramid-like building surrounded by a moat. At the top sat a huge crocodile (or maybe alligator) with a banana balanced on its head. After a long journey, you'd finally made it to Rainbase—a flashy city full of casinos and restaurants—just as the sun began to set. Now, you were both searching for a place to stay before heading off to the next city.
"It's weird to see such a luxurious place just after looking at so many ruined cities along our journey." You said, eyes scanning around. The two of you wandered through the city streets, taking in the strange contrast Rainbase offered.
Compared to Nanohana and the other half-deserted towns you'd passed, Rainbase looked like another world entirely. Clean stone streets shimmered with reflections from lights. The buildings looked more polished, with smooth sandstone walls and ornate balconies decorated with hanging plants and soft lanterns.
Everything shimmered. Like the whole city had been dipped in gold.
The scent of grilled meat and spices drifted from street vendors who called out to passing tourists. The locals walked with confidence—well-dressed, smiling, chatting easily with one another. Even the street performers looked sharp, juggling or dancing.
It was far different from the wary, tired faces you saw.
"Yeah." Loki replied. "They're surely lucky compared to the others. I wouldn't be surprised if there's something going on behind the scenes. Places like this always have secrets, based on our experience."
"Let's not jinx it and get in trouble." You chuckled.
"Still... I could use a warm bed and real food." Loki stated.
"Same. Let's find an inn before we collapse right here."
Finally, after nearly an hour of wandering through glowing streets and turning down overpriced or fully booked places, you both settled on an inn. It was a bit pricey for your taste but hey, after everything you'd been through, maybe it was time to spoil yourself.
The lobby smelled like vanilla and citrus, with soft music playing in the background and a marble fountain gently trickling in the center.
As the receptionist handed over the keys, you glanced at Loki and showed him two keys. "Separate rooms?"
Loki raised his eyebrow, suspecting you. "For real?"
"Why not? I think we need our personal time." You said, grinning. "Also, the fact that I want the bed for myself this time."
Loki rolled his eyes but didn't argue. "Fair enough."
Your rooms ended up being right next to each other, connected by a door in between—very practical, just in case. Nothing too eventful happened after that. Just a warm shower, a soft bed, and for once, silence. The city's noise faded into the background, replaced by the low hum of the cool breeze through the window and the steady rhythm of your own breaths.
