"This is the king's fault!"
You and Loki froze in your tracks as the angry voice echoed through the air. Both of you exchanged a glance, curiosity and caution flickering in your eyes.
You had just arrived at Erumalu, the so-called "Green City." Of course, that name seemed ironic now. The city was once known for its flourishing gardens and lush greenery, but the sight before you told a different story.
Before your journey, the villagers had warned you: "Don't expect much. The city is all but abandoned."
"IF IT WEREN'T FOR THAT 'MIRACLE' HE PERFORMED, HE WOULDN'T HAVE DRAINED THE LIFE FROM OUR CITY!" The words rang out, filled with bitterness and despair.
As you stepped closer, their warnings became painfully real. The promised lush greenery was nowhere to be found. Instead, all that stretched before you were endless dunes of sand, swallowing the remnants of a once-thriving city. Collapsed buildings with no life in sight, stood as hollow skeletons, and the silence felt heavier than the scorching heat that surrounded you.
"Well, this journey is going to be harder than I thought..." You murmured, your eyes scanning the desolate landscape. "We might not even see anything interesting... except for these ruins."
Loki stood beside you, his gaze fixed on the crumbling structures that once held life. "Looks like the 'Green City' is nothing more than a ghost town now." He muttered, his tone laced with unspoken concern.
"Not literally, let's check who's here still." With cautious steps, you and Loki moved closer to the city. As the ruins drew near, an unexpected sight greeted you—camels resting by the remains of broken walls and men clad in armor standing guard.
"Please forgive us, let us—"
Just as you were taking it all in, a voice pierced the stillness once more. "Your charity crap won't work on us anymore! I almost lost my family because of you all. Leave me!" The enraged man shoved a white-clothed figure away from him, his face twisted with anger and grief. Sand kicked up beneath his feet as he stomped off, leaving behind a tense silence that hung heavy in the air. He clicked his tongue in irritation before turning away.
Loki crossed his arms, watching the man disappear into the ruins. "Charming fellow." He muttered dryly, his tone dripping with sarcasm.
You stayed silent, your eyes fixed on the man as his figure grew smaller, eventually blending into the ruins. But then, you felt you're being watched. You slowly turned back, and your suspicions were confirmed. Several pairs of eyes were locked onto you and Loki.
You didn't sense any aggression from them—no hostility in their stance or movements. Instead, their eyes carried a quiet caution, as if they were unsure of what to make of your sudden presence.
You sighed, wanting to ease the tension, you took a step forward and bowed slightly. "We're sorry for eavesdropping." You said softly, with respect. "We won't tell anyone."
