It was Christmas morning, and the twins were beyond excited to open the mound of gifts Simon and Kiera spent the entire month wrapping, staying up until four a.m. to make a display to represent what Santa had left them. This was Stella's first Christmas that she would likely remember now that she could walk on her own, but she was still new into the world to experience the magic of Christmas.
Simon and Jacob were in the kitchen, making breakfast for Kiera as it was something Jacob wanted to do for his mother on Christmas morning. In fact, he insisted on it.
Simon couldn't help but chuckle down at him, "You're excited, yeah?"
"Yes! I saw all of those presents under the tree! I want to rip them open!"
"You will, but it's not time yet. Your sisters are still asleep and so is your mum."
"Will she want to wake up to eat the breakfast I made her?" He pouted.
"Of course, she will. If you take your eyes off of it for a while, it'll end up going to me."
"But dad! You ate two of the cinnamon rolls you helped me bake!"
"That's not a bad thing. They're good!" Simon chuckled, running his fingers over the top of his son's head. "I think you're going to be a really good baker, lad. And dare I say it, those cinnamon rolls you made were better than your mum's."
"Really?" He smiled.
"Yes. You know why?"
"Why?"
"Because you put more icing on them than your mum does, and I have a sweet tooth."
"I do too, daddy!" Jacob giggled. "Can you open the door now?"
"Yes, but be quiet, okay? Your mum is still asleep and so are your sisters."
"Well, sisters need to get up because the sun is up! Momma can sleep for as long as she wants."
"You're just like me, son," Simon shook his head, fighting a laugh. "I raised you right."
"I'm surprised I was up before you this morning, daddy!"
"Don't get used to it, lad. I was up late last night, so I overslept."
"Can we do something different for Christmas today, daddy?"
"What did you have in mind?"
"I really want to ride Peanut for my Christmas present. Can we all go riding?"
"You'd rather go riding instead of opening the gifts Santa brought you?"
He nodded, "We can open our presents later, but it's pretty outside and I want to ride Peanut."
Simon huffed playfully, hoping he could change his son's mind and push back riding his pony until later as the gifts he got him went with his new phase of wanting to be a cowboy - toting a toy gun and lasso and all. Simon and Kiera both were so excited to give him his new toy set that he would happily wear while he rode his pony, and he was going to do everything in his power to change Jacob's mind about riding his pony this early.
"I know you want to ride Peanut this morning, but I have a really good feeling that Santa brought you a good gift this year."
"Daddy, Peanut was the best gift I ever got, and I got him from you and mommy. Santa can't top that," Jacob smiled.
Simon's heart couldn't help but swell with pride at how loving his son was, knowing that he did just right as a first-time father, and even though he couldn't wait to see Jacob grow into a young man, he wanted him to stay little forever. He loved every moment with his kids, and nothing was going to change that.
