"Why can't I wear this to the dance?" Evie sighed to her father, hating how he immediately disapproved of every dress she tried on, Simon ignoring Kiera's approval as she didn't see the dresses as inappropriate.

"It's too revealing," Simon grumbled, his headache intensifying the longer he sat there.

"She's just showing her shoulders, Simon..." Kiera sighed.

"Still too much," he grumbled again before standing to his feet and grabbing a shawl on the nearby hanger before draping it over her shoulders. "if you can find a dress like this, then you have a deal."

Evie scoffed and rolled her eyes before taking the shawl off, "C'mon, dad, really?"

"You're not the one paying for this, love. I only agreed for you to go to this school dance because your mum threatened my life if I didn't."

"But I'm literally only showing my shoulders and a little bit of cleav--"

"--Which is too much. Go and find a dress that covers that part and you can show your shoulders. You're sixteen, love."

She sighed before glancing over at her mother, watching her nod in agreement before mouthing, 'He's talked about this since before you were born. Good luck.'

Evie's brown eyes moved up to meet her father's, their irises matching the exact color to prove that they were related, except the dimples that complimented her cheeks were an exact image of her mother, and Simon couldn't help but grin. "I'll find a better dress, dad."

"It's about time you caved, because I was growing rather impatient, but I could've sat here all evening just to prove a point."

Evie's grin grew wider, her dimples showing further dimension, "I know you would've, dad."

"You'll learn one of these days. Go find you a better dress and we'll get something to eat on the way home."

She nodded before grabbing one of the more conservative dresses on the hanger, showing it to her father to get his nod of approval before she went into the changing room.

"That girl is going to be the death of me, love," Simon sighed as he sat down next to Kiera, patting the top of her knee.

"Well, you better come up with a way to deal with it because you'll have the same issue when Stella gets older." Kiera giggled.

"So, you never did tell me why Jacob didn't want to go to the dance this weekend."

"He said he'd rather stay home and sort calves with Johnny instead of being in some crowded gymnasium trying to have a good time."

"Yeah, he's definitely my son," Simon chuckled. "though I can't blame him. I was the same way when we went to the military ball."

"Such good memories..."

He huffed a laugh, "Fond ones, and I'm not even talking about the ball, but what happened before."

"Oh, you have such a good memory given your old age, baby." She teased.

"Old age? Love, I'm just fifty," he grumbled. "but it sounds so bad to admit that."

"I know, me too," she sighed. "though I never would've thought I would've made it to my age now."

"You and me both, love, but you still look the exact same as the day I met you, even with those little pieces of gray in your hair." he teased, knowing that she would playfully slap his arm.

"Mhm, and even though you keep shaving your face, you can't hide those grey hairs from me, baby," she smiled, grabbing his chin with her right hand and watching his face spread into a grin before he playfully jerked his face from her grasp. "That's what I thought."

"Always pointin' out my grey hairs."

"Of course," she giggled. "I'm a sucker for a man with salt and pepper hair. Makes me want a baby in every room of that lodge..."

Simon arched his brow, "Love, you and I already talked about this..."

"I know, but the thought is nice..." she trailed off. "Too bad you're "fixed."

"Is that what you call a vasectomy? Fixed?" He scoffed a laugh.

"It's what we call it when you take a dog to the vet to get fixed! Would you rather me openly talk about the fact you had a vasectomy?"

"I'd rather you not, love."

"That's what I thought."

After a few moments, Evie finally revealed herself in the baby blue dress that she felt was perfect. Maybe my dad was right after all, she thought after seeing how both of their faces lit up with excitement. "Oh, sweetheart, that one is perfect!" Kiera smiled. "What do you think, Simon?"

"A lot better," he nodded. "it really flatters you, love."

"Thank you

"Thank you. Do I have your approval?"

"I haven't suggested anything else, did I?" he arched his brow.

"Nope, you didn't!" Evie laughed. "Ryan is going to love it!"

"Wait, who?"

"Ryan. My date?..."

"You never said anything about having a date, Evie."

"Because I knew if I did, then dad wouldn't let me go."

"Who is this kid?" Simon began to question.

"He's a year older than me. Plays on the football team-"

"Let me guess: quarterback?"

Evie nodded.

"Bloody fucking Christ. Kiera, did you know about this?"

She shook her head, "I just found out."

His chest heaved heavily as he shook his head, "Invite him over for dinner."

"Tonight?"

"Yes, tonight. I need to vet him and decide if he's going to pass the test or if I need to drown him in the river."

Evie giggled, "He's not that bad..."

"We're going to find out."
