Chapter twenty nine

"man down"

"'Im such a dumb bitch."

"Yeah, you realize that now?" Emilio smirked, not even bothering to glance up from his game.

I glared at him, grabbing the nearest pillow and smacking him square in the face.

"Don't make me kick you out of my house."

He rolled his eyes, tossing the pillow aside and refocusing on his screen.

It had been a week since I last talked to Alessandro.

Normally, he would've spammed me with calls, texts, or even showed up unannounced, refusing to leave until l talked to him. But this time? Not a single call. Not even a text.

The silence stung more than I wanted to admit.

The day we argued, he drove me back to my house without a single word, his knuckles white against the steering wheel. When we arrived, I got out with a quiet "goodbye," and he didn't say a thing.

Ugh, why do I have to be like this? Why do l always get myself into the worst situations?

For fuck's sake, there are plenty of men practically begging for my attention, and yet here I am, stuck on my sister's fiancé-a man drowning in secrets.

What could possibly be so bad? I already knew he killed his parents, and I thought that was the worst of it. What could top that?

I let out a frustrated sigh, which apparently caught Emilio's attention.

The sound of his game suddenly stopped, and I felt the bed shift as he moved to sit next to me.

"What's wrong?" he asked, his tone softening.

"Nothing," I said quickly, avoiding his gaze.

"Really?" He raised an eyebrow.

"Because you've been lying on your bed staring at the ceiling like some lovesick teenager. You're clearly not fine."

"Leave me alone, Emilio," I muttered, turning my head away.
"You're the one who called me over because you felt lonely."

His voice was teasing, but there was genuine concern behind it. "Just tell me what's going on. I'm your brother."

I sighed, sitting up and moving to the edge of the bed. "I can't."

"Can't what, Sollana?"

"I can't tell you, that's all," I said, shrugging.
