Adelaide held onto me as she needed me more than she needed to breathe. It's been chaos this year, but if I can finally have her in my arms again, it will be worth it. Adelaide is worth fighting for until the end. I won't give up until she asks me to.
I took Adelaide to the nearest coffee shop only two blocks away. It was mostly the reason why I chose my office here, It has the best coffee. Adelaide is shaking in my arms, the shock hasn't worn off yet. She's looking into space like she's not here. I would do anything to get her to snap out of this. I keep fucking things up and ending up traumatizing her more.
I sit her down at the table and seat myself across from her. She looks straight at me, but it's like there's nothing there in her eyes like she retreated to the darkest parts of her mind and I don't know how to get her back.
A lady walks up to our table with a bright greeting and smiles at both of us. She asked us what I would like the drink. I tell her about coffee. She looks at Adelaide and asks her, but she just stares blankly at me.
I turned towards the waiter and said, "She will have water," I replied to her. She looks between Adelaide and me suspiciously. I guess she decided to leave it alone. Her judgment doesn't matter to me. All that matters to me is Adelaide. She turns and walks away into the kitchen.
I turn my attention back to Adelaide. She was still staring straight at me with a sad look on his face. I got up and went to her side and sat down, wrapping my arms around her and pulling her to me. She immediately let out a cry. I held her tighter.
"I'm so sorry, Adelaide. I wish I could have saved you from all this," I said softly. I caress my hand through her hair, and she sighs deeply pushing herself deeper into my chest.
A few minutes later the waiter comes back and sets the water and coffee on the table. She turns away without making eye contact. I rolled my eyes at her back as she walked away.
"It's not your fault, Carter," she finally speaks.
"Adelaide?" I questioned, making sure I actually heard Adelaide. She's been nonverbal and crying for a least an hour I was happy to sit here with her forever if she wanted. I will always be here. This time I won't walk away, I will fight for her, for us.
She moves her head so she's staring directly at me. A shy smile on her lips. She looks nervously at me but looks like she finally snaps out of it. She doesn't move away from my arms. "Yeah, Carter?" she answers.
I let out a breath of relief. I was thankful she finally snapped out of it. I wanted too badly to shake her out of it, but I knew it wasn't what she needed. What she needed was for me to just be there for her. I smiled at her and she returned it.
"Nothing," I replied. She gets up bringing the water to her lips while staring at me. I can tell she's thinking something. A question she's probably not going to ask. I lean in and kiss her forehead. She smiles a real smile this time.
In a matter of minutes, she becomes Adelaide again talking, and laughing like nothing had ever happened. It made me worry for her. Was this an act? was she going to go dark again when she went home?
I tried to put it to the back of my mind. She was happy now and that's all that matters. We can worry about after later. What I do know is that now that I have Adelaide. I'm never letting her out of my sight.

Months later
Were cuddling in bed when Adelaide looked at me. I can tell she's thinking about asking me something.
"Shoot Adelaide," I say.
She gets up off the bed into the sitting position and I know it's serious. "I want us to go to couple therapy," she blurts out. I can tell she's nervous by the way she's playing with her fingers. This was probably a hard thing for her to ask.
She gets on her knees and turns to me. " I mean I have been going to therapy for a couple of months now and I feel like our relationship would be better in the long run if we can work out some of the trauma from the past and-" I pressed a kiss to her lips to stop her from rambling.
"Anything you want princess," I replied, and her smile went wild. I will spend the rest of my life finding ways to keep her smiling.
The end
