December 4, 2006
It was freezing, and Rose found herself lying on bed, vomiting—sweating and pale. She was sick.
She had hid in the only location she had not given to Jonathan. The mansion.
She was grateful she had never told him where she had hidden Raven Mark and Sasha. It was the only place she could think of to hide after she fled.
She knew that while they all recovered from the wounds she had inflicted—even while she was wounded herself—she had to hurry back and wipe her secret room clean. Her computer, the projects , the photographs—everything. She no longer trusted Jonathan. She had left his house keys behind.
She had used the secret tunnels to avoid being seen. Hoping no surprises turned up there while she moved.
As soon as she arrived, she rushed to gather all the food, a few medical supplies and water she could carry before going into hiding.
On her way, she grabbed a radio and batteries, knowing that the lights, internet, and any other form of communication had yet to be restored.
As she threw up, she listened to the radio.
The war had been won. France and its allies had prevailed.
She had also been declared missing.
The broadcast announced how she had taken command of the army and ended the war—how she had served her country and inspired millions. Her lips curled in disgust.
She would have preferred the truth to be told that it was her families fault it even started.
There was no doubt in her mind that her father had orchestrated this narrative to uphold the Hansley name.
Through the radio, she heard him speak. He claimed he wanted his daughter back, that she was all he had left. He expressed fear for her well-being.
Meanwhile, on another frequency, people were debating her intelligence.
Her father had likely told the others, Jonathan and the rest she was out of control, and now she was being hunted everywhere.
However, they would know it was a lie if Elijah had told them he had been the last to see her.
She swallowed.
Roselyn Hansley was being searched for—not just because she was missing, but because of her brilliance, her performance. The government wanted to keep her.
Rose forced herself to stand.
The marks on her body throbbed with a pain beyond her imagination. She felt as if her body were literally cracking beneath the black streaks.
She turned off the radio. She was sick and fighting off exhaustion.
It felt as though if she fell into a deep sleep, she wouldn't wake up—like her body was warning her she would slip into hibernation.
She dragged herself into a quick, warm shower, only to come out freezing. She managed to eat a small jar of baby food, the only thing her stomach could handle, before swallowing painkillers.
She wrapped herself in as many blankets as possible, then turned her gaze to the silver coin and the Holy Grail beside her.
A Bible lay next to them. She had found the bible in the mansion.
For now, she couldn't even turn on her computer or do anything else—without power and with her body this weak, it was impossible.
She couldn't even try and seek justice like this.
