The words hung in the air, her gaze unwavering. She wanted the weight of the statement to sink in, not just for Elijah but for everyone in the room. She watched his grey eyes flicker with confusion, uncertainty, and something deeper—like a dawning realization. Slowly, his gaze shifted from her to the lasers surrounding him, disbelief beginning to surface.
Rose didn't wait. She tossed the helmet cleanly through the lasers, her motion smooth and confident. The helmet sailed through without a single reaction from the beams, landing in Elijah's hands.
Rose turned away from Elijah, her expression composed and calm. She caught the reactions of the others—a blend of shock and disbelief etched across their faces. The weight of the revelation settled heavily in the room.
Jonathan, usually the epitome of composure, faltered for just a moment. His half-eaten sandwich slipped from his hand, hitting the floor with a dull thud.
"Was my time enough for you, sir?" Rose quipped, her tone mockingly formal, a sly smirk playing on her lips.
She found him without words—just like everyone else.
As she walked out, she had to hold back a laugh threatening to escape. "I did say your idea was fun, just not much easier," she added, tossing the comment over her shoulder toward Jonathan as she pushed the door open and stepped into the night.
The cool air hit her face, and she inhaled deeply. The playful feeling in her chest didn't last long; it quickly intensified when she knew she'd find out soon if her hunch was right. Soon she heard Jonathan's hurried footsteps catching up behind her.
"You are much, much crueler than me," he said, a note of genuine wonder in his voice.
Before anything else could be said, the sound of more footsteps reached them. She turned to find the four exhausted individuals approaching, their postures tense and uncertain. They looked as if they were bracing for another round of torment.
"The soldiers you mentioned," Lucas began, his voice tight, "they aren't coming back, are they?"
Jonathan shook his head, no.
A pin-drop silence followed.
Lucas opened his mouth to speak, then closed it again, as if trying to find the right words. Finally, he blurted out, "We're exploding this place, aren't we?"
Jonathan's smile widened, mischievous and unapologetic.
"But we scrubbed the whole place up—we—" Riley began, his voice rising with disbelief and frustration.
Rose watched as the disguised woman groaned audibly and made a move toward Jonathan, only for Riley and Teresa to restrain her. Their irritated expressions betrayed their exhaustion and irritation, though they seemed to have accepted their roles in the unfolding events.
"You didn't actually think on having the children walking through blood and bodies, did you?" Jonathan asked, his tone sharp and incredulous.
The looks in their eyes said they had, but none of them dared to voice it. Instead, they composed themselves quickly.
"Let's go get the buses," Teresa muttered defeated, her voice strained, addressing the disguised woman who probably wanted to choke Jonathan to death.
The trio left, leaving Lucas standing awkwardly with Rose and Jonathan.
Before Lucas could say anything, Elijah emerged from the warehouse, and to Rose's surprise, he was wearing the army uniform. The sight caught her off guard, but she quickly masked her reaction.
Elijah walked over to them with deliberate steps, each one carrying an unmistakable air of fury and disbelief. His hands tightened into fists, but he said nothing. Instead, he positioned himself beside Rose, his silence speaking louder than words.
