"No more leaving this place!" Rose yelled to the others, her voice firm and unyielding.
"Keep your watch on the news, and if anything is needed, email me," she added, turning to Wyatt. He nodded, his expression tense but resolute.
She shifted her gaze to Levi. "Less than a minute if you need to call," she instructed.
Levi nodded solemnly, understanding the gravity of her words.
"And if communication and power is lost," Rose continued, her voice steady despite the weight of her warning, "consider everything outside compromised."
Everyone went pale, but nodded in understanding.
She got into her car as the others hurried to open the gates. Looking back at them, she bit her lip, her heart pounding. They had set secret phrases and codes, but none of it felt enough. She still worried.
"Keep this place safe, God," she found herself begging silently.
With one last glance at the group, she pressed the accelerator and drove away. She heard the gates close and the locks being secured behind her.
Once on the road, Rose opened her laptop, shutting down cameras in a wide radius, deleting traces, and scanning for anyone who might have seen anything. She worked furiously, her focus sharp despite the exhaustion weighing on her. She managed driving and doing everything she could.
Finally, she called Percy.
"Percy, has Jonathan called? Any updates?" she asked, her voice tight.
"No, ma'am," Percy replied.
Rose bit her lip in frustration. "I'm heading to my office," she said.
"Yes, ma'am. We've secured all the supplies. Where should we take them?"
Rose hesitated, then replied, "If I'm not wrong, my father or mother cleared the first floor of my apartment building. The other apartments should be empty as well."
"Correct, ma'am," Percy confirmed.
"Get everything loaded into those apartments and secure them. Consider those your new living spaces for now."
"Yes, ma'am," Percy said, and Rose could hear the relief in his voice, as if he, too, had been wondering where they would rest.
She was about to end the call but stopped.
"Percy."
"Yes, ma'am?"
Rose was silent for a few seconds.
"Don't touch Raven's apartment. And try— I know it's hard— but try to be discreet about what you're unloading into the apartments."
"Yes, ma'am," Percy assured her.
Rose glanced at her watch. It was 11 a.m., and exhaustion weighed heavily on her.
Just a little more, she thought, trying to push herself forward.
She had to pull the car over for a moment when a wave of sleep hit her. Closing her eyes briefly, she felt a small measure of relief. The endless list of tasks spun in her head: the media, reviewing if the airplane had landed safely, the lists, the evidence, and the other children.
Taking a deep breath, Rose opened her eyes and restarted the car. She made her way to the office, her focus wavering but steady enough to continue.
At least it wasn't raining today, though the sky was an ominous shade of gray.
She was grateful the media was away. When she reached the elevator, she joined a few others heading up.
"Miss Hansley, thank you so much for resolving the paycheck issue," a woman said, giving her a warm smile.
