Another 2 weeks went by. As they rolled into their first month of staying on the island, it seemed that their lives started picking up.
Harper started working longer hours in the past week because she wanted to help out Akamau's research. Akamau owned a library full of books about Paradisian Herbalism in hand with Crystonology.
Though some of those books were in their language, some of them were translated. Harper became more curious about the information she was studying. She would stay late to read through every passage, and she would take notes.
She learned that there was a volcano on the main island of Paradiso full of organic Puron.
Whenever there was an eruption, thousands of those crystals would wash away from the lava and drift to Alkapoltua. It is still being studied as to why this phenomenon happened.
But the passage stated it had something to do with the Erblu. She also found out what that creature was.
It was a large glowing whale species that inhabited the small island. She had never seen one, but the books described them to come in bright purple or blue colors.
And there was a legend that Akamau told her. The call of the Erblu would lead many sailors astray, or lead the island men with horrid desires to their demise.
But whatever those whales were doing, was helping to purify the toxic crystals. Hyde's sickness wasn't as rare as she thought.
The main islands Volcanic eruptions caused a handful of people to also suffer from crystallization. However, because of the available resources, they were able to receive medical attention for it.
Hyde's case was severe because... well, Harper couldn't understand why. She knew it had something to do with his bloodstream. She wondered if there was a way she could come up with an antidote that would cure it completely.
It was thought-provoking.
Harper ended this particular work day earlier than the rest. She received her payment and rushed home before the sun had fully set.
She made it on time and walked into the shed. Socks greeted her playfully, which Harper was starting to slowly grow accustomed to. But the only problem she had was that he was starting to get bigger.
Socks were always petite. When she told Hyde her worries, he explained that it could be that this Whilfox was probably abandoned because of being a runt.
So he was just a late bloomer. Harper didn't know how big whilfoxes could become, but she just hoped it wasn't as big as the bloodhound.
There was food on the counter, fruit stuffed coconuts, and a plate full of sautéed shrimp beside it. She smiled and took a quick nibble, letting the flavors invade her taste buds.
He had been hiding it from her, but Hyde was a great cook. One day she came back to the shed from a long day at Akamau's and walked in to see him hunched over the coal whipping up pan-fried fish and sautéed vegetables.
It was the hottest sight ever. And the taste of his food was even hotter. She found herself drooling for more but quickly came back to her senses.
It made sense that he probably picked up cooking from Giada.
"He did it again, mmm..." Harper moaned when she scooped up another shrimp and tossed it in her mouth.
Hyde opened the door to the bathroom, alarming her. He dried his hair with a towel, looking very exhausted in the eyes before sauntering over to the couch.
