Her legs carried her away from Akamau's hut and back to their hut. If the villagers discovered that she killed one of the natives, they would probably hurt her, Hyde, and Yanpu.
She needed to get their things and find a way off this island. The thought of Yanpu being killed because of her actions made her feel ill.
Then suddenly, a strong hand clasped her bicep, forcing her to a halt and stopping. Harper slapped them, fearing that another man would try to hurt her. She let out a screech.
"What do you think you're doing?!" Hyde seethed at her when he turned back around to face her after the hit. Once she realized it was Hyde, she broke down into tears and jumped into him.
Her arms wrapped around his back and she dug her face into his chest. "Hyde... I... I..." Her lips quivered with every word.
He steadied his feet to balance. He was shocked and confused by her sudden attack, and then a change of attitude. But he was also startled by how much her body was shaking against him.
He looked down at her and noticed visible bruises on her shoulders and arms. Then he noticed splotches of red.
"You're hurt." He voiced a hint of genuine concern showing.
"No..." Harper shook her head. "It's n-not mine..."
"What?"
"I k-killed him!" Harper sobbed. "I killed him..." Harper felt her legs go weak.
"Okay, wait, you need to explain—"
"I killed a man! He attacked me first, but I only meant to knock him out! But now he's dead, and I'm gonna get caught. We have to get our things and get off this island now!"
"Harper," Hyde grabbed her shoulders. "Calm down..."
"I can't!" Harper whined. "He's dead... I killed someone... I'm a horrible person..."
"If you killed someone to defend yourself, you're not a horrible person." Hyde sighed. "Relax, let's try to figure this out together."
He looked over her head and in the direction of Akamau's house. A dastardly plan formulated in his thoughts. He stepped in that direction, attempting to start what he conjured up in his head.
"W-Wait! You can't go!"
"I have to see the body."
"W-why?"
Hyde chewed on his bottom lip in frustration. He yanked his hand out of her grasp before she could say anything, and quickly raced off. Harper called his name in horror, not wanting him to see just how much damage she caused.
She was more than ashamed of herself. She felt guilty. The blood on her arms and skirt made her want to crawl into a dark hole and live out the rest of her days there.
When Hyde reached the hut, he glanced around the area thoroughly. He saw specks of blood on some of the grass tips, but there was nobody.
Hyde placed his hands on his hips and sighed. Whoever it was, temporarily became stunted. The suspect was still out there somewhere. It wasn't a surprise.
He knew that Harper wasn't strong enough to kill someone, even if she had a blunt object as her defense. He raced back to her, only to find her crouched next to a tree.
Her face was buried in her knees and she was sobbing heavily.
"Harper," He voiced softly, "You can stop crying now. There wasn't a body."
