On her way back from working at Akamau's, Harper fixed her bag strap over her shoulders. The bag was leather, and thick. It was given to her as a gift, to make it easier for her to transport the books Akamau encouraged her to study from.
Harper felt excited. As things were now, she was ecstatic to have discovered a way to cure Hyde's illness. She decided to make time from that point on to study the Erblu's pearl and its purifying qualities.
Other than figuring out how she could improve the antidote for Hyde's poisoning further, Harper was busy planning for Yanpu's special day.
"Oh!" Harper's eyes lit up when she spotted Hyde outside of the hut lighting some of the torches around the porch. "Hyde!"
He stopped briefly and turned around to face her. Initially, he didn't want to be bothered, but he was slightly curious about her quick sprint toward him and her piped attitude.
"You're awfully chipper than usual." Hyde lit a match and placed the small flame over the coal interior of the torch. Then he blew it out and shook the stick repeatedly to make sure it wasn't still burning.
"I took your advice and got some syrup. Actually, I made it myself." Harper reached into her leather messenger bag and pulled out a small glass bottle of an orange and yellow liquid.
"What is it?"
"Mango syrup. I gathered some fruits from Akamau's garden and she taught me how to cut them and grind them into this. We can use it to make Yanpu's ice cream."
"Ah," Hyde scoffed, "Did you say 'we'?"
A frown immediately appeared on her face. "You told me you'd—"
"I know, I know, I'm just messin' with you." Hyde yawned.
"It's tomorrow, and I really want him to be surprised."
"He will be."
"There's nothing wrong with being prepared."
"I'm trying to reassure you."
"You are?" Harper gasped in shock.
"Dunno. Maybe?" Hyde crossed his arms. "Is it working?"
Harper paused for a bit to think about it. "A little."
Oddly enough, she didn't feel as deathly afraid and nervous as she did months ago. The two just blinked at each other in silence. Harper felt slightly embarrassed, but she forced the conversation to continue.
"How is your hand?"
"Better." He nodded.
"That's good." She smiled softly. "Anyways, we have to do this soon. Did you already talk to the Chief?"
"No."
"Why not?"
"Because,"
"Because? Because what? You are aware that I told you about Yanpu last week, right?"
"I remember. Working two jobs just takes a lot out of me."
"You have abilities. You can withstand anything the facility throws at you, but you're complaining about working 2 jobs."
"I don't always use my full strength."
"You should, then you wouldn't be so tired all the time."
"Oho..." Hyde laughed, but it came out sinisterly. "If you worked more hours, and got paid more," Hyde snatched the glass bottle out of Harper's hand, before tossing it up.
