"Run!" I yelled over my shoulder at everyone else in the castle. Me and a group of people were running through the halls, trying to find a way out. My ratty clothes were scorched by falling debris already, so I didn't bother much when more rained down from the ceiling. I rolled away from the falling support beam, got back on my feet, and kept running.

The castle was under siege by the invading Fire Nation. The war had been raging for so long now, I hardly remembered what started the conflict in the first place. It was a generations long war that started long before any of the current participants were born.

"You guys go ahead! I have to check Beatrice's room!" I yelled as I made a mad dash for the far side of the castle.

A loud rumble shook the stone walls as I got into the throne room. Rocks rained down from the ceiling, almost crushing me. I jumped out of the way, covering my head as I did so. The rocks crashed against the hard wood floor, where I had just been. A large plume of dust filled the air, making it impossible to see, and nearly impossible to breathe.

A figure emerged as the dust settled. In the dirty haze, I thought it was king Nathan. Carefully I sat up.

"King Nathan?" I called out to the figure.

"Where do you think you're going, (Y/n)?" I froze at hearing the shadow speak.

"Leave me alone, Preston."

"You know you can't stay here."

"And why can't I stay here?" I asked back, letting my nervousness hedge into my voice.

"You know why, (Y/n). You can't let Nathan find out you killed his wife." His voice sounded like he was trying to placate a baby.

"How do you know I killed the Queen?"

"Word spreads, (Y/n). I know King Nathan will want you dead when he finds out. Join us."

"Why should I join you?" I asked, drawing away from his outstretched hand. "How do I know you won't just turn me over to him after I join?"

"We'll protect you. Join my army. You'll have diplomatic immunity. Nathan won't be able to get to you. And, besides, he won't be around for me to turn you over to after this."

Fear rose uncontrollably through my entire body. He was going to kill King Nathan.

"Don't act like you're surprised to hear me say that. The man wants you dead, (Y/n). It's either I kill him, or he kills you."

Footsteps walked up behind Preston and I soon saw his blonde wife, Brianna. While her husband was dressed in a plain red button down shirt with black pants and a black suit jacket, she wore a magnificent red dress. The entire thing was designed to look like fire with orange and yellow fabric helping define the flames. On top of both their heads sat gold crowns bejeweled with rubies.

"Join us, (Y/n)," Brianna cooed. "You can be safe with us forever."

I backed up, not wanting to get closer to them. It felt like I was in a lose-lose situation. I was caught between a rock and a hard place.

"Get away from her, Preston."

I turned around and saw King Nathan standing on the other side of the room, the princess in his arms.

"Make up your mind, (Y/n)." Preston's voice sounded tight. He wanted to get out of here. "You can have a better life in the Fire Nation. You wouldn't have any red in your ledger. You wouldn't have to worry about your reputation."

I turned and ran into King Nathan's open arms, Beatrice also grabbing at my hair. I looked over my shoulder at Preston and Brianna, both thoroughly shook.

"Last chance. Either join us, or we will ruin you." Preston's final ultimatum.

Detaching myself from Nathan's hug and Beatrice's hair pulling, I turned on the invaders. "Go ahead. Ruin me. I could give a damn about my reputation in the Fire Nation."

"And in the Unspeakable Army?" Brianna asked, cocking her head to the side.

"They will believe their queen."

I gave a sharp stomp of my foot on the stone flooring and my clothing began to change. Instead of the dirty clothes I had on previously, a lime green dress started forming around my shoulders. The bodice was sleeveless, the fabric pulled into the seam on the shoulder to give it more detail. The collar rose up behind my neck, fanning out in a frill. A pink to purple gradient spread from the nape of my neck to the edge where lace adorned the seam. The skirt matched the bodice, flaring out in layers until it touched the floor. The middle of the skirt, however, had a forest green panel with ruffles. My hair, meanwhile, pulled its way up into a bun with tendrils framing my face. The finishing touch was the silver crown with emeralds that sat just right in my hair. It matched Nathan's perfectly.

"What?" I heard the Fire Nation rulers mumble, seeing the matching crowns on Nathan and my heads.

I took Beatrice from Nathan's arms and held her close.

"Mommy!" the little girl cooed.

"Are you ok, my Queen?" Nathan asked, pulling me into him.

"I am now, my King."

"But, you," Preston mumbled, confused.

"But I what, Preston?" I asked, my gaze set like stone. "Spied on the Unspeakable Army? Betrayed Nathan's trust? Killed the queen?"

"But didn't you?" Brianna asked.

"I have been a loyal resident of the Unspeakable Army my whole life. I gave my heart and soul to this country. When Nathan and I first met, he immediately knew he loved me, though I'm not sure how he knew after a chance meeting. When I became queen, I was weak-willed and let the nobles walk all over me. So I decided to change. I killed the woman I was, gutting her from the inside out. When the news spread to other countries, hushed whispers how some lower class girl had killed the queen and married the king, I let it spread."

Silence settled over the throne room between the two opposing rulers. Brianna tried pulling Preston away, but he didn't budge.

"So you lied to everyone? You let a rumor spread so far it would damage your reputation in other lands? How do you know they won't come and try to free you from the sins they think you've done?"

"Because I have had the chance to talk diplomatically with each of them. But this silly war has kept us from having any sort of productive conversation whatsoever. So, what say you we bury this feud and discuss things like the rulers we are?"

Preston's face hardened as I spoke, clearly not liking what I was suggesting. "We will never stop fighting until the entirety of the Unspeakable Army falls to the Fire Nation.

A cold smile ghosted its way across my face. "Fine. Have it your way. We won't stop until the Fire Nation is nothing but a burned scar on the landscape, a pitiful reminder of what it once was. Guards!" I called to those just out of sight. "Show them no mercy."
