I sat by the open window, the sea breeze blowing my (h/l) (h/c) hair around my face. Tears had long dried on my cheeks, leaving uncomfortable streaks under my eyes. Still, I didn't want to leave my window in hopes he could hear my song.
"There once was a lad sent out to sea, ordered by the king to stay away from me. A princess should not fall in love with a commoner and a thief."
My voice hardened in rage at my father's actions. My love was not a thief. My father wrongly accused him of thievery. His solution was to exile Cedrick to a ship, far away from the kingdom where pirates attack. The final part of my ballad saddens before hardening again in faith as the real reason for my song echoes off the stone walls.
"So I sing this siren's song in hopes one day he will come home with more than his weight in gold to take me father's throne."
The kingdom referred to me henceforth as the Siren's Princess. Each night I would sing my song for hours, hoping my love would hear me and come back to me. My father came pounding on my door every time he heard me singing to tell me to give up. I kept the door locked, never losing my place by the window.
"There once was a lad sent out to sea, ordered by the king to stay away from me. A princess should not fall in love with a commoner and a thief. So I sing this siren song in hopes one day he will come home with more than his weight in gold to take me father's throne." I sang my heart out, wishing and wishing my love would come back to me.
One night, I summoned my messenger pigeon and clipped the container to his leg. Inside the container was a paper repeating my song.
"Go find my love," I cooed to the bird. "Go find Cedrick."
I let the bird fly off into the night, my song leading his way into the night.
"There once was a lad sent out to sea, ordered by the king to stay away from me. A princess should not fall in love with a criminal and a thief. So I sing this siren song in hopes one day he will come home with more than his weight in gold to take me father's throne."
The most magical night was when the bird flew back. My precious bird, named Compass, flew right to my window and softly cawed at me until I walked up to him.
"You didn't find him," I sighed as I went to unclip the container from his leg. I opened it up, expecting to see my note still in there. To my surprise, inside was a ragged piece of paper. I unrolled it and my heart swelled at the words.
There once was a princess I loved to see, daughter of the king who said to me: "stay away from my daughter and sail the ocean green". So I sing this siren song in hopes one day she'll get this note, knowing I'll love her until I take the throne.
"Oh Compass! He is still alive! I have to write him back right away!" I placed a small pile of birdseed down on my desk and began drafting a new letter.
One day, my father came through my door without knocking. For the first time ever since Cedrick was exiled, he actually had a smile on his face, though it looked more like a smirk. I hastily shooed Compass away and turned to look at my father.
"(Y/n), you are to marry the Prince of Asleth. Your wedding is in one month."
"But Father! You said I could choose who I marry!"
"Not since you decided to become involved with that common scoundrel I sent out into the ocean to drown. You will marry the Prince of Asleth and that is final!"
He turned and left my room, just as suddenly as he arrived. My heart dropped in my chest. I crumpled up the note I was writing to Cedrick and immediately started writing a new message.
Dear Love I write this urgently for the king has stole my right from me. When will I feel your touch again? It kills me not to know. So I sing this siren song because I fear I've been betrothed. Come once you get this note and we'll make our new home.
Compass flew back to me and I clasped the container back to his leg.
"Go find my love," I whispered to the bird as he flew out the window.
"There once was a lad sent out to sea, ordered by the king to stay away from me. A princess should not fall in love with a criminal and a thief. So I sing this siren song on hopes one day he will come home with more than his weight in gold to take me father's throne."
The day of my wedding drew closer and closer, setting me on constant edge. I was forced into my white dress, adorned in pearls. I walked out to the beach before the wedding, staring out at the water. Hope that I would see his ship sailing across the horizon slowly died in my chest. He wasn't coming.
I went to the wedding, knowing I wasn't actually going to go through with it. I got halfway down the aisle before I turned around and ran out the doors of the church. I ran down to the ocean, my skirt getting soaked by the crashing waves. A ship bobbed not too far out from the shore. I longed for that to be Cedrick's ship, here to take me away to a life I wanted with him.
"There once was a lad sent out to sea, ordered by the king to stay away from me. A princess should not fall in love with a criminal and a thief. So I sing this siren song on hopes one day he will come home with more than his weight in gold to take me father's throne."
I poured my heart and soul into my words. I wanted it to be him so badly that nothing in the world could stop me. I felt like I could actually will him into existence next to me.
I heard the song before I saw who was singing. My heart swelled as I recognized the words I had read on paper so many nights in a row.
"There once was a princess I loved to see, daughter of the king who said to me, stay away from my daughter and sail the ocean green. So I sing this siren song in hopes one day she'll get this note, knowing I'll love her until I take the throne."
"Cedrick!" I yelled. "You're back!"
"Of course. I couldn't leave my beautiful princess."
"I want to run away with you, Cedrick. I want to join you on your ship, living our lives together on the open seas."
"I want my Siren Princess with me forever. That is, if she'll have me as her husband."
"Yes Cedrick! I will gladly marry you!" I jumped into his arms as he spun me around. I finally had my pirate prince back with me forever.
