Tossing and turning, her eyes suddenly burning paired with a sharp pain digging into her back, Ranya squinted her eyes open, entirely expecting to see the sky above her. Instead when she saw the familiar crown mouldings she had grown used to along with the sun rays piercing through the windows of the room, she realized where she was.
Confused, still delirious from the dream she had just had, Ranya sat up realizing the heavy dholki dress was digging into skin, the indents on her side proving so. When did she get here? Why didn't she change? Why couldn't she remember it? All of these questions ran through her mind as it occurred to her that Saad was gone.
"Saad?" She called out, hoping maybe he was in the washroom. Giving it a minute, she understood he definitely wasn't within earshot. Grabbing the sides of her lehenga, she dragged herself out of bed and towards the door to see if maybe he had went downstairs, hoping that maybe he could help her out of this dress.
"Oh you're awake!" Zareen smiled, almost crashing into her as she opened the door just as Ranya reached for it- startling her.
"Wh- yeah, I'm up." Ranya rubbed her eye, part of her mascara leaving a mark on the back of her hand. Staring at it, confused, she asked, "Why am I still in this? Why do I still have my makeup on?"
Brushing past her and into her room, Zareen sat on the bench at the feet of her bed, "Saad brought you up here, you fell asleep in the sehn while we were talking."
Even more confused than she had been prior, Ranya thought she misunderstood, "What do you mean brought me up here?"
"He carried you up here. He didn't want to wake you up which is why you're in yesterdays clothes and makeup right now." She told her, watching as Ranya's face began to tinge with embarrassment.
Clearing her throat, she closed the door, taking a step towards Zareen. "Okay, can you help me out of this now?" She changed the subject, biting back a smile and fighting off the burning sensation under the apples of her cheeks.
"Yeah, you better clean up. Everyone's coming." Zareen explained, undoing the clasps of her top.
"What do you mean everyone? And where is Saad?" Ranya asked, holding the front to her chest and she spun around to face her cousin.
"Missing him already?" Zareen teased, earning a light smack on her arm from her older cousin.
Giving her a stern look, Ranya headed to her closet without a word, imploring Zareen to elaborate rather than teasing her.
"He went to the airport to pick up your family. They're going to be here soon. His family is gonna be here in a couple of hours too, at least that's what I think I heard." She explained, getting some makeup wipes out for her in advance, since her skin looked ghastly having 17 hour old makeup on.
Throwing a random shirt on, not realizing it was actually Saad's, Ranya headed towards the vanity to tame her look. Hair a mess, pins likely lodged in places she couldn't reach herself, and fly aways she'd never seen before, Ranya began wiping her face while Zareen helped detangle the hair.
"Why wouldn't he take me?" Ranya asked herself, frowning slightly as she went over her eyes at least two or three times to get everything off.
"I asked him while he was heading out and he said you told him no. Something about you being a heavy sleeper."
Ranya let out a short laugh, realizing that sounded exactly like her. That's what she had done when he had arrived at the airport too, telling her mom she didn't want to pick him up because she wanted to sleep in.
