Astrid’s POV
I was starting to worry about Hiccup. He had been constantly on the move these past few days—repairing the village after the battle with Drago, managing complaints from the villagers, attending meetings with other tribes, and making sure the dragons were well cared for.
Ever since Stoick died, Hiccup hadn’t been the same. I knew he cried most nights. I was there to hold him, to comfort him, and I missed those quiet, tender moments—just the two of us, curled up together, our breaths syncing under the stars. But now… he hardly came home. He spent nearly every hour in the forge.
When Gobber told me Hiccup hadn’t had a proper meal or even a full night’s sleep, my heart sank. Every time I tried to help—offering food, begging him to rest—he either ignored me or brushed me off with some new dragon-related task.
But not tonight. Tonight, I would make sure he ate. Maybe even rested. It was already late. The village was quiet, everyone asleep. The only light came from the forge—soft, flickering, and lonely.
I held a small woven basket in my hands, packed full of his favorite dishes: roast yak, fresh bread, dragonberry jam, and his favorite fruits. If anything could coax him to pause, this would.
I pushed the forge door open, not bothering to knock, and peeked inside.
And what I saw broke my heart.
There he was—Hiccup—sitting hunched at his desk, scribbling furiously onto parchment while mumbling incoherently.
"No… no, that’s not right," he muttered, crumpling another sheet and tossing it into an already overflowing pile.
He let out a groan and clutched his hair in frustration, his shoulders trembling with exhaustion.
I stepped in silently, walked over, and gently took his hands from his head, massaging his scalp softly. I set the basket on the desk beside him.
He flinched at my touch.
"Astrid… what are you doing here? You should be home, sleeping."
He removed my hands and turned back to his notes. I tried to keep a brave face, but the sting of his rejection was sharp.
"I… I brought you something" I said softly. "Your favorite food. Please, Hiccup. You need to eat."
"I don’t have time to eat, Astrid. I need to finish this before I can even think about the next set of plans."
His tone was sharper than usual. My heart sank a little more.
Still, I pressed on. I reached over and snatched the papers from in front of him, holding them behind my back.
"Hey!" he snapped, standing up. "Astrid, give those back."
I didn’t back down. Not yet.
"No! Not until you eat something or at least take a nap. Look at yourself! You look like you haven’t slept in days."
"I SAID I DON’T NEED TO REST OR EAT!" he shouted, slamming a fist on the desk. The basket toppled, spilling food everywhere.
My heart cracked.
"Do you even understand how busy I am!? I have to get all this done before morning, THREE meetings tomorrow! I don’t have time for this… this nonsense! You're wasting my time with things that don’t matter!"
I stood frozen, the words hitting me like a storm. My hands trembled. The tears began to blur my vision.
"You… you think I’m waisting your time?" My voice broke. "I’ve been trying, Hiccup. Trying to be there for you. To help. But you push me away. Just like you’re pushing everyone away. Stoick didn’t do everything alone and he wouldn’t want you to, either!"
