Third POV
"C’mon, let’s go find your dad," Astrid said, about to run back toward the village when—
"No, no," Hiccup said as he dismounted Toothless and ran toward Astrid, stopping in front of her.
"No, not yet. They’ll kill Toothless," Hiccup said, and both of them looked at the dragon.
"Astrid, we need to think this through carefully," Hiccup said, now looking down, then walking away from her.
"Hiccup, we just discovered the dragon’s nest. The thing we’ve been after since the Vikings first sailed here, and you wanna keep it a secret?" Astrid said, looking at him as he slowly walked toward Toothless.
Astrid scoffed and raised her voice, "To protect your pet dragon? Are you serious?"
Hiccup stopped walking and turned to Astrid with a serious face.
"Yes," he said firmly.
Astrid was taken aback, her face softening.
"Astrid, I can’t just let them kill Toothless. I can’t do that. I’m continuing my plan," Hiccup said, walking toward a rock.
"What plan?" Astrid asked.
Hiccup carried a big basket. Inside were clothes, food, and books—but he packed them light so Toothless could carry it without struggle.
"I’m running away, Astrid. I befriended a dragon. There’s no way the village is going to accept me—not that they ever really did..." he muttered the last part.
Astrid stood in shock, then ran toward Hiccup and grabbed his shoulders.
"H-Hiccup! Running away? That’s your plan? There must be a way! Tell them, Hiccup, that dragons can be our friends," Astrid said, her heart aching, which freaked her out a little.
Hiccup looked at Astrid with a sad smile.
"You know how they are, especially my father, Astrid. Don’t worry, I left a note to Gobber to tell him I’m gone and they don’t need to look for me."
He walked toward Toothless and tied the rope around the basket securely.
Before Astrid knew it, she blurted out what was on her mind.
"What about me?"
It was a whisper, but both of them heard it, and Hiccup froze.
Hiccup had always had feelings for Astrid since he was young, admiring her from afar but never approaching. He would stare in awe every time she trained or helped the village during raids. He dreamed of being with her but knew it wouldn’t happen, so he kept his feelings hidden.
He turned around to see Astrid looking away with a sad expression. His heart clenched, knowing he’d made her sad but it also shocked him that Astrid cared he was leaving.
He walked up to her and took her hand, squeezing it, making her look at him. Hiccup smiled at her.
"Promise me something, Astrid."
She was about to respond when they heard three loud horns from the village. Both looked in that direction, and Hiccup’s eyes widened.
"That’s not the raid horn," Astrid said, now looking at Hiccup.
Hiccup turned to her, heart pounding. He didn’t care about getting beaten for what he was about to do because if he was leaving, then he might as well make one last memory.
Hiccup grabbed Astrid by the hand and kissed her, his other hand cupping her cheek. Astrid gasped in shock but eventually kissed him back.
Astrid's arms sliding around his neck. The kiss deepened, growing heated—desperate, even. His fingers tangled in her braid as her hands gripped his tunic, pulling him closer.
