Third POV
The door slammed shut, and a heavy footstep echoed through the silent house. Hiccup exhaled deeply and pinched the bridge of his nose. A pounding migraine was already making itself known.
There had been too many demanding Vikings today. Hiccup had tried to take all their orders just to keep them from throwing a fit, but it was overwhelming.
He walked toward the fur-covered chair and sat down, staring at the fire. There were still so many things left to do, and he wasn’t even halfway through. It was late and Astrid was probably asleep but even if he didn’t want to wake her, he needed her now more than ever.
With the dragons gone to the Hidden World, and with his father gone as well, he had been thrust into the role of chief far too quickly. His plate was overflowing with responsibilities. His mother was there to help, but she often spent time with Gobber or with the village children.
At least he had his chieftess, Astrid. He didn’t want her to be too stressed, so he only gave her lighter tasks. She already handled Berk’s security and armory, and she was currently training the teenagers at the arena. He couldn’t bear to pile even more onto her shoulders when she already carried so much.
Hiccup massaged his temple and sighed. Leaning back against the chair, his eyes began to close as sleep crept in.
Suddenly, cool fingers touched his temple, gently massaging. He flinched but instantly recognized who it was. A relaxed sigh escaped him as he leaned further into the touch.
"Why are you awake?" Hiccup murmured.
"I was waiting for you. I heard you slam the door, and I thought you’d come up, but you didn’t. So I came down and here you are," Astrid said softly, continuing to massage his temples.
Hiccup hummed, eyes still closed. Astrid kept going until, after a few minutes, she stopped. Hiccup immediately missed her touch but opened his eyes when he felt her sit beside him, cuddling close. A blanket draped over her shoulders, her usually braided hair now loose. Hiccup smiled at the sight and wrapped his arm around her.
He sighed and leaned his head back, staring at the ceiling. Astrid tilted her head, looking at him with concern.
"Hey, what’s wrong?" she asked.
Hiccup met her gaze and smiled. "I just…missed Toothless. If he were here, we would’ve had an evening flight."
Astrid’s lips curved into a warm smile. "I bet Toothless misses you too. He’d love to see you fall off his back again when you doze off mid-flight."
Hiccup chuckled, and Astrid’s heart warmed. It had been too long since she heard him laugh genuinely.
"That was one time!" he grinned.
"Three times," Astrid corrected, rolling her eyes. "The last two, I had to catch you with Stormfly."
Hiccup smirked and gave a dramatic half-bow. "My apologies, m’lady."
Both laughed until their breaths steadied, leaving a calm silence between them. Astrid turned her gaze toward the fire while Hiccup looked at her, unable to stop admiring her.
"I love you."
Astrid blushed, glancing shyly at him. The way he looked at her, genuine and wholehearted made her heart skip a beat.
"Really? Or is this because I cleaned your wardrobe earlier so you could finally find your clothes?" she teased, expecting a sarcastic comeback.
Instead, Hiccup wrapped his arms around her and pulled her close, burying his face in her hair. Astrid chuckled softly and leaned into him.
"I want to tell the world how much I love you," his muffled voice whispered.
"Oh yeah? Do it then," Astrid teased again, shifting slightly so he could stand. But his arms only tightened around her.
He leaned closer and whispered into her ear, "I love you so much. You make me happy and you'd make me smile every single day."
It took Astrid a moment to realize what he meant, and when she did, her heart skipped. To him, she was the world.
"Smooth, Haddock. Smooth," she chuckled, her cheeks still warm.
He kissed her cheek, then her forehead, before leaning back. "How about we go upstairs and sleep?"
"Yes, please," Astrid nodded eagerly.
Together, they stood and headed upstairs.
Time skippp
The two lay in bed, arms wrapped around each other. Silence filled the room, but it was the comfortable kind. Both were exhausted from the day’s endless duties, their bodies craving rest.
Hiccup gently massaged Astrid’s scalp, while Astrid traced lazy circles across his back. Slowly, fatigue overtook them.
And as sleep claimed them, neither felt the weight of their responsibilities, only the warmth of each other’s embrace. No matter how heavy the world us, they would always have each other.
So this is short but it was in my draft way to long and I just had to finish it :(
