Third POV
Walking around the edge was probably Hiccup's favorite thing to do. He was proud of himself—of this island. He was also proud of the gang, too. Together, they built this incredible place and made so many memories here.
It was nearing sunset, so Hiccup wandered over to the edge of the pathway. He absolutely loved sunsets—there was just something magical about them.
He heard footsteps behind him and turned around, spotting Astrid walking toward him.
His heart began pounding in his chest, his palms growing sweaty as the girl stood in front of him.
"What'cha doing, Hiccup?" Astrid asked casually.
He shrugged his shoulders. "Just walking around, I guess," he said.
Astrid nodded and looked out at the sunset. She sighed and smiled softly.
"It's a beautiful view here," she said, still gazing at the glowing horizon.
Hiccup, who hadn’t taken his eyes off Astrid, couldn’t help but admire her. How could he not? She was so beautiful.
"Yeah... beautiful," Hiccup murmured.
A few seconds later, Astrid turned to look at Hiccup—only to find him staring at her. Her cheeks flushed when she realized he wasn’t talking about the sunset.
Caught in the act, Hiccup quickly turned his head away to hide his growing blush and awkwardly rubbed the back of his neck. Astrid couldn’t stop the smile tugging at her lips at the sight of a flustered Hiccup, and she chuckled lightly.
"W-what?" Hiccup asked, embarrassed, as Astrid shook her head.
"Nothing," she said, then turned her attention back to the sunset.
Hiccup eventually managed to calm his blush and looked out at the view again.
The two stood quietly next to each other, staring into the brilliant colors of the sky, perfectly content in the silence. Hiccup couldn’t resist inching a little closer to Astrid until their shoulders touched. Astrid didn’t mind—in fact, she shifted slightly closer to him.
Feeling a bit bolder, Hiccup gently wrapped his arm around her waist, pulling her in until her head rested against his chest.
Astrid closed her eyes and let the silence soak in. She felt surprisingly safe like this with Hiccup. She never let boys get this close to her, but something about Hiccup made her feel... content.
It was probably because she had feelings for him. How could she not? Hiccup was always thoughtful—smart, funny, caring. Astrid could go on and on.
The same went for Hiccup. His crush on Astrid had long since grown into something deeper. He was in love with her—his best friend. She was everything to him. And if it ever came down to it, Hiccup would sacrifice himself for her without hesitation.
Just like right now.
Astrid looked up at him with a warm smile. Hiccup noticed her movement and looked down—now their eyes were locked, their faces inches apart.
Hiccup gently caressed her cheek, and Astrid leaned into his palm. Their eyes stayed fixed on each other, intense and full of unspoken emotion. Hiccup’s heart thumped harder—this moment was perfect.
"Thank you for everything, Astrid," he said softly. "I wouldn't have come this far if you hadn’t believed in me. I think this is the perfect time to tell you... I love you, Astrid Hofferson."
Astrid’s eyes welled up with tears.
"I—"
Suddenly, loud shouts erupted behind them. Both Hiccup and Astrid turned to see Barf and Belch flying toward them—blindfolded.
