This takes back when Hiccup was in comma after defeating the Red Death.

Astrid's POV

I sat beside Hiccup, who had been in a coma for three weeks. The small items in my hand had been tucked away in his nightstand.

A scaly head nudged my arm, and I turned to see Toothless looking at me, then at Hiccup. My heart ached for the dragon, and I gently rested my hand on his.

“He’s going to be fine, Toothless. He’ll wake up soon,” I said, forcing a smile. Toothless responded with a soft, gummy smile that made me chuckle.

He padded over to his favorite rock and sat down, still watching us closely.

I hope so.

I turned my attention back to Hiccup, whose eyes remained closed. He looked so peaceful, almost like he was simply sleeping. Seeing him like this made my throat tighten. He didn’t have to do what he did—sacrificing so much for the village. All he ever wanted was his father to be proud of him.

None of this would’ve happened if Stoick hadn’t rushed into the dragon nest. And Hiccup, being as stubborn as ever, insisted on facing the Queen. He defeated her… but lost something precious in the process.

My thoughts drifted back to when Hiccup and I flew on Toothless together for the first time. That feeling—soaring through the sky, the clouds brushing past us, the colors of the sunset painting the horizon, and Hiccup’s warmth beside me—was something I would never forget.

I’m not sure why that last part came to mind. Maybe it was the cold that night, or maybe it was just the truth. To be honest, I always liked being close to him. I reached out and gently took Hiccup’s hand in mine.

Please, Hiccup, wake up. Seeing you like this… it breaks me. You don’t deserve this. And the village—they just moved on, like nothing happened. No apologies… except from your father and the other riders,” I whispered, pressing a kiss to his hand.

“I promise I’ll protect you. You won’t be alone anymore. I’ll be right here, always. Just… wake up, Hiccup. For me.”

I was exhausted from the day's chores, so I lay down beside him, still holding his hand. I let the darkness pull me under as my tired body finally relaxed.

------------------

I woke up to a groan beside me and the sound of shifting sheets. My eyes fluttered open, still adjusting to the dim light, and then I heard it again.

I turned and saw Hiccup slowly opening his eyes.

“Hiccup?” I sat up quickly, leaning toward him as my grip on his hand instinctively tightened.

He blinked a few times, his green eyes meeting mine before squinting. “Astrid?” he rasped, his voice dry and hoarse.

“Think you can sit up?” I asked gently. He gave a small nod.

Carefully, I helped him sit against the headboard. I reached for the cup of water on the nightstand and handed it to him. He drank every drop, and I took the cup back with a small smile.

Before I could say anything else, a large black shape lunged at us. Toothless nearly knocked me over in his excitement, warbling and panting with joy. He licked Hiccup’s face, making him groan.

“Toothless! That doesn’t wash off,” Hiccup said, playfully glaring at the dragon.

Toothless let out a sheepish warble. Hiccup chuckled and rubbed his head affectionately.

“I missed you too, bud.”

Then he turned to me and smiled.

“So… tell me, how did I get here?”

I exchanged a glance with Toothless before answering. “After we saw Toothless protect you from the Queen’s explosion, your father made sure to get you back to Berk as quickly as possible so Gothi could treat you.”

“Luckily, we had one boat that wasn’t too damaged. We brought you back, and Gothi treated you before anyone else. She said waking up would depend on your strength—it could’ve taken days, weeks… even months. But you woke up after three weeks.”

I scooted closer and held his hand again.

“Hiccup, we could’ve lost you. Berk would have no heir, your father would have no son, Toothless would never let anyone ride him again… and I’d be alone. And all for what? To please the people? Most of them haven’t even apologized for what they did to you.”

I turned away, the frustration building in my chest. I wasn’t angry at him but at the village. At everyone who pushed him to this point. Maybe even a little at Stoick.

“I’m sorry,” I whispered, the words heavy with guilt. “For everything. You almost died, and… Odin, I don’t know what I would’ve done if-”

A hand reached out, gently stopping me. I looked up and saw Hiccup smiling through the pain.

He shifted, but suddenly froze. My breath caught as he pulled the fur blanket aside and stared at his left leg.

My heart pounded. “Gothi tried, Hiccup. She really did. But the infection was spreading too fast. She had no choice.”

He didn’t speak. He just stared at the prosthetic.

“Gobber made it. He wasn’t sure if you’d like it. He said you could make adjustments once you felt up to it.”

Still silent, Hiccup frowned deeply. Toothless warbled softly, nudging his shoulder. Finally, Hiccup’s posture slumped.

I couldn’t hold back anymore. I wrapped my arms around him and buried my face in his neck, tears spilling freely.

“I’m so sorry, Hiccup. You don’t deserve this,” I whispered.

His arms slowly wrapped around me, and I felt warm tears soaking into my tunic. He held me tighter, and we cried together.

After a while, I stopped sobbing. Hiccup was still quiet, though his tears hadn’t completely dried.

“Astrid?” he said softly.

I hummed in response, still wrapped in his embrace.

“You haven’t done anything wrong. You don’t need to apologize. In fact… you helped me more than my own father ever did. You believed in me when no one else did. You stayed. Thank you, Astrid.”

I pulled back to look at him. He smiled, tears still on his cheeks.

“I still feel like I could’ve done more,” I said, wiping his tears away. “But I swear—this time, I’m not leaving your side. I’ll help you through everything. I’ll protect you.”

“Well, it’s nice to know someone’s got my back,” he said with a grin.

We both chuckled.

I narrowed my eyes at him, then punched his shoulder lightly.

“Ow! What was that for?” he winced, rubbing the spot.

“For scaring me half to death and making me cry,” I said, grabbing his tunic and pulling him in for a kiss.

He froze at first, then kissed me back, his hand resting on my waist, the other on my cheek. I pulled away and looked into his bright green eyes.

“That… was for everything else.”

We smiled together, the pain not gone, but softened—because we were here, and we still had each other.
