Hiccup's POV
I was already at the house, working on paperwork for the new buildings I planned to construct, when I heard the front door slam—hard.
I stood up and peeked through the doorway, just in time to see Astrid storm in, gripping her hair in frustration as she let out a groan.
"Stupid Vikings. They never know how to take no for an answer," she muttered, pacing across the room, fury written all over her face as she glared at nothing in particular.
I cleared my throat to make my presence known. "So… no cuddles, then?"
Astrid jumped slightly, startled, then turned to face me. The anger in her eyes softened the moment she saw me.
"Hiccup? I thought you’d be home later. I haven’t even started dinner yet—"
She spun toward the kitchen, but I stepped in and gently grabbed her by the waist, pulling her into a hug.
I’ve known Astrid for years. When she’s angry or hurting, she pulls away. Not because she doesn’t trust me, but because being vulnerable terrifies her. And yet, nothing hurts me more than seeing her carry it all alone.
I held her close, rubbing her back as she stood stiff in my arms, then slowly relaxed into me. I kissed the crown of her head and whispered, "Please tell me what’s bothering you. It kills me to see my betrothed hurting."
She just shook her head and buried her face in my neck.
Then I felt it—warm tears soaking through my tunic. My heart ached.
Without a word, I lifted her. Her legs instinctively wrapped around my waist, her arms around my neck. She didn’t move, didn’t speak.
I carried her to the fur-lined chair near the roaring fire and sat down, keeping her in my lap. I gently removed her hair tie, letting her golden hair fall loose, then began massaging her scalp in slow, calming circles.
Minutes passed. Her breathing slowed, and the crying faded. She pulled back slightly, eyes cast down, cheeks glistening with tears. I wiped them away.
Still holding her, I leaned back, letting us both settle onto the chair. Astrid rested on top of me, her head on my chest. I grabbed a nearby blanket and threw it over us, cocooning us in warmth.
Winter was coming, and Berk was already biting cold. Astrid didn’t fare well in the chill—fevers came easy. She instinctively snuggled closer into me.
"I lowve youu," she mumbled, voice muffled.
I smiled and cooed, fingers running gently through her hair again. "I love you too, Astrid. We'll talk in the morning. For now… let’s just enjoy this."
She lifted her head to look at me, resting her forehead against mine. Her bright blue eyes met mine, strands of golden hair falling forward as she gave me the smallest, sweetest smile.
I couldn’t help it.
I leaned in and kissed her—slowly at first, then deeper. She responded without hesitation, fingers curling in my hair, pulling me closer. The heat of the fire was nothing compared to the fire between us.
When I finally pulled away, breathless, she giggled, cheeks flushed.
"What?" I asked, smiling.
She shook her head, eyes still glowing. "Nothing. Just… happy being with you."
I kissed her cheek, then her nose, her forehead, and lastly, her lips again—softly.
"You look tired," I said gently. "Let’s get some sleep. I’ve been craving cuddles, anyway."
Astrid laughed softly as I guided her head back to my shoulder. She nestled into my neck, shivering slightly when I kissed her there.
"Goodnight, Hiccup," she whispered.
"Goodnight, m’lady," I whispered back, holding her tight as the fire crackled beside us.
-------------
The next morning, I woke up to the soft weight of Astrid still draped over me, her golden hair tickling my chin.
The fire had died down to embers, but the blanket wrapped around us kept the chill at bay. Sunlight filtered through the windows, casting soft golden streaks across her peaceful face.
I stayed still, not wanting to wake her. There was something sacred about watching her like this—so calm, so quiet, her worries momentarily forgotten. I gently ran my fingers through her hair, careful not to disturb her.
She stirred a little, murmuring something unintelligible before shifting closer, her nose brushing against my neck.
"Mm... you’re warm," she mumbled.
"And you’re clingy in the morning," I teased softly.
"Am not," she said, tightening her grip around my waist like a sleepy koala.
I chuckled. "Yeah, okay. Not at all."
She let out a sleepy laugh and finally lifted her head, her eyes squinting against the morning light. Her hair was a wild mess, but to me, she looked perfect.
"Morning," she said, voice hoarse and soft.
"Morning," I replied, brushing a stray hair from her face. "You slept well?"
She nodded, resting her chin on my chest. "Better than I have in days."
"Good," I said. "I’ll always be your human pillow if that’s what it takes."
Astrid rolled her eyes but smiled. "You’re already halfway there."
We stayed like that for a while, exchanging quiet smiles and the occasional nose nuzzle. Eventually, I leaned up slightly and gave her a long, slow kiss on the forehead.
"I was thinking," I said, "how about we skip the morning chores and just… stay like this for a while?"
"You're just trying to get out of paperwork," she smirked.
"Maybe. But mostly I’m trying to make sure my fiancée doesn’t overwork herself again."
Astrid softened, brushing her fingers across my jaw. "You're annoyingly thoughtful sometimes, you know that?"
"I try," I said, grinning.
She leaned down and gave me a soft, lingering kiss. When she pulled back, her smile lingered too.
"I love you, Hiccup."
"I love you more."
"Not a chance," she said playfully and nestled back into me.
We stayed like that for another hour—wrapped in warmth, wrapped in each other. No dragons, no village drama, no loud Viking interruptions.
Just us.
