After hours

Chapter 7

Work has become so tiring, i'm starting to gain weight. My clothes are tighter around my waist.

My feet are killing me. I have my first sonogram today.

Jacob meets me at the OB and and the same snotty doctor smirks at me and puts way to much gel on my stomach.

"Okay, everything looks good." She coldly replies.

I look at Jake and he looks at me with that big goofy grin and kisses me, right in front of the Doctor.

"Wait a second." She says staring intently at the screen.

"Is there something wrong?"

"No, your having twins. Congrats."

"What?" I ask utterly in shock.

She says nothing just hastily wipes the gel off my stomach and leaves the room.

"Twins?"

"Twins."

"Oh my god. How are we going to raise twins? Jake this is too overwhelming. i just got used to the idea of one! two! that's too much! We can't do this-"

"We'll figure it out." He reassures me, grabbing my face in between his hands.

I nod and take I deep breath getting up from the table. I'm only two months pregnant but I look more. Oh, great. If I'm this big now imagine how big I'll be at nine months!

"Come on my mom is waiting for us in the cafeteria. I told her our situation. Kinda. I didn't say that you were pregnant, I just couldn't do it."

"What?! What happens when she sees me walking in like a beached whale!"

"You're not a beached whale. I just figured we should tell her in public so she won't get mad. Well that mad. And there are witnesses everywhere, so we'll be fine."

I walk pretty much behind Jacob into the cafeteria.

"Hey mom." She stands to hug him, and he moves. Leaving me and my small protruding stomach out in the open.

Her eyes immediately flash down and she clenches her jaw.

"When. Did. This. Happen." She barks.

"Mom, listen calm down-"

"Don't you tell me to calm down! You listen here young man. I do not approve of this. You will abort that baby this instant! You are not ready to be a father. And you are not going to take our money the way you tried last time!"

"Mom! How dare you say-"

"You really think I would kill my babies?" I ask, emphasizing the ies.

"There's more than one? Oh this is just great, this was your plan all along wasn't it! I knew you always wanted to marry jacob for the money, then he finally took my advice and broke up with you. Now you get pregnant so he has to marry you! I must say son i'm not proud of your actions, letting her get into your pants so easily," she whispers the last part and i am in utter shock.

"I will not stand her and let you treat Evi this way. Goodbye mother. I will talk to you later when you have had time to cool down." And with that Jacob walks away, pulling me with him.

I'm so glad tomorrow is Sunday, a day off work. A day without the stress of the evil monster- in- law. But it's Valentines' Day.

I woke up to the sound of someone knocking on my door. It's around noon so it might be my old neighbors wanting me to eat their pastries.

I look through the peephole and its Jacob. He has a 2 dozen of roses with a lily in the middle.

"Hey baby, Happy Valentine's Day. How are you?"

"Happy Valentine's Day. I'm doing okay, I'm getting more tired but I'm so excited."

"Me too, do you want breakfast or lunch?"

"Both, please?"

"Certainly. What do you want?" he laughs.

"Bacon, French toast, pancakes, omelets, hamburger, and fries. Oh! Also a chocolate milkshakes? Sorry, I'm eating for three now."

"Anything for you, love." he bends down to kiss me.

"Well while you are cooking, I'm gonna get ready."

"Okay, remember you will look beautiful in anything."

I go into my walk in closet, pick out a navy blue tee and a pair of jeans. I apply a natural look and put my curly hair in a ponytail. Today is going to be so much fun.

Jacob and I are going to the beach. It's not as hot but the water is beautiful. I hear this 90's music.

I smell the food and rush to kitchen. I see Jacob dancing to 'What a man'. He's so cute.

I wrap my arms around his waist and kiss his shoulder.

"Mmh. I love bacon." I say grabbing a piece.

"Haha, I know you do. Are you happy to go to the beach today? I think we should watch the fireworks and have dinner on the boardwalk."

"Yeah, that'd be awesome."

"Well c'mon, let's eat."

We sit down and have an amazing brunch. The breakfast was spectacular and the lunch was delicious. He is in such an amazing cook. We talked about our patients and our little bundles of joy.

"Hey, Evangelina?"

"Mhmm?"

"I have a surprise so go to your room and don't come out until I say so."

"Uh okay," weird.

After about 15 minutes, I hear Jacob call my name. I walk into my living room.

Jacob is standing in the middle of the roses that made a heart. The lilies are on the inside of the heart. There's candles spread out through the room.

The whole room was wonderful. I am speechless.

"Evangelina Marie Stevens, i don't even know where to begin, i've rehearsed this many times but i guess not enough," he laughs and pulls me close to him. Taking my face in his hands, i crane my neck up to look him in the eyes. He rubs my cheek with his thumb in a soothing way that makes me want to kiss him. "I love you, i've loved you since the day i met you. You were the cute little freshmen taking senior human anatomy and weren't afraid to sit right next to me and start talking," i laugh at the memory. "I love the way you used to talk so passionately about ballet and how you always had your head buried in a book. I was an asshole and i when i got to college everything changed. I shouldn't have left you and i should have been there for you when your parents passed," i can feel the tears coming. "I know that i can't make up for all the years we lost but i want to start over. i want to raise these children together and spend the rest of my life with you," my breath hitches in my throats and i know what he's about to do.

He steps back and pulls a ring out of his pocket. Looking me in the eye he steps down onto one knee, "Evangelina Marie Stevens, will you marry me?"

I'm full on crying now and laugh and shake my head up and down. "Yes, yes of course." He grins and slides the ring onto my left hand.

I pull his face to meet mine and kiss him passionately.
