Evi's POV

I wake to the sound of a beeping monitor.

It takes a few blinks before my vision becomes clear, but when I move my head to the left Jacob springs out of a chair and is by my bedside with tear streaked cheeks.

He grabs my hand and buries his face in my side.

"I'm so sorry Evi." He croaks.

He finally looks into my eyes.

He's a mess. His eyes are bloodshot, like he hasn't slept in days.

"What happened?" I ask.

"You got into a car accident. Then you came here, and at first you were fine besides the broken bone in your leg and the cut on your forehead. But then we found a shard of glass on your heart. And- and I had to preform the surgery." He pauses with tears flowing down his face. "You died on the table. You died under my care. You flatlined for 4.33 minutes. You were dead for 4 whole minutes Evi. I don't know what I would have done if I lost you."

By then tears were flowing down my face too.

"I love you so much Evi, I'm so sorry."

"Shh. It's okay."

He lays his head on my stomach and cries for what feels like hours.

I must have fallen asleep because I awoke to Alyssa standing over me.

"Hey, how do you feel?"

"My head is killer."

"I'll get your medication. How's the leg?"

"Can't really feel it. Did you numb it or something?"

"Yeah. It's completely broken in two were gonna have to put a cast on it soon. Probably within the next day or two."

"Where's Jacob?"

"I sent him home. He's going through hell, with what happened during surgery. It was scary Evi, scary seeing him like that too."

"Oh," is all I could think of to say.

"What happened? He kept saying it was all his fault."

"We got into a huge fight and that's why I was in the car to begin with."

"Oh."

"So, how bad do I look right now?" I say with a laugh, to try and lighten the mood.

"Horrid." She says.

"Fix me?"

"Oh, I guess."

After raking a brush through my hair she pulled it back into a french braid. She then helped me wash my face and brush my teeth all of which I could not have done without her.

"Okay, you look, better."

There was a knock on the door before Jacob entered.

"I'll leave you alone, I've got rounds anyways." Alyssa said leaving.

"Hey, I'm sorry about earlier when I just spilled the whole story on you. I was a mess. I'm better now. How do you feel?"

"It's okay. I'm okay, the pain isn't unbearable."

"I'm so sorry."

"Stop apologizing. It's not your fault-"

"But it is my fault. If I hadn't started that stupid argument then you wouldn't have gotten into the car in the first place."

"Let's just forget about the whole damn argument. I'm fine. I'm alive. I'm sorry that I've been so distant lately. I've really missed you."

He just looks at me.

"Oh would you just kiss me."

You didn't have to tell him twice. He immediately grabbed my face with both hands and pressed his lips to mine.

"I love you."

"I love you."
