Evi's POV

"Doctor Stevens! I need help!" One of my interns yells from down the hall.

I go as fast as I can.

"What?"

"I intubated her but she's still not breathing."

"You intubated her trachea, no wonder she's not breathing." I take the tube out from the woman's neck and redo what my intern messed up. "There, she's breathing." I sigh and walk out of the room.

My interns are idiots.

This is going to be a long day.

~

I have worked for twenty-four hours straight, and every chance I had I walked to the day care to play with the girls.

It sucks when I'm on call.

And I have to work another twelve hour shift, at least Jacob works it with me.

I collapse onto the on call bed.

"Oh, no you don't." Jacob says turning on the light.

"Let me sleep," I groan.

"You have to study for your Boards.

I have been trying not to think about them. The Board is a oral test that will either make or break my career.

I don't even know what I'm going to specialize in.

"You leave for your test in two days."

"So?" I say, my eyes still closed.

"Okay, I get that you're a really good doctor, but let's not get too full of ourselves now dear."

I sigh in defeat and get up.

"Okay, what's your specialty?"

"I don't know."

"Well, you need to figure that out quickly."

"I think I might want OB, but I can't decide."

I really love working with the babies and new mothers or mothers-to-be, but it's so heart breaking when something happens.

The rest of our study session went by agonizingly slow.

He left after awhile because he was paged 911. I fell asleep for about 30 minutes until my pager went off. I hurried, got my stuff and ran to my patent's room. By the time I got there. The nurses and another resident looked at me sadly.

The nurse pulled the cover over the mother-to-be's face. I sat there in despair. I don't know what to do. Maybe if I didn't fall asleep or I wasn't studying, I could've saved the baby and mother's life. I waited until the husband arrived.

"Hi, I'm Doctor West. You are Mr. Caswell?"

"Yes."

"I'm so very sorry, your wife had appendicitis. Unfortunately she thought they were contractions and it was too late before we realized that they weren't."

"What? No, no that can't be true! My wife she can't be dead! My baby! No, no, no, no." He screams.

"Sir, I'm very sorry for your loss." And I can't say anything else. I walk quickly away from the man, so he doesn't see my tears.

This is the one bad thing about being a doctor.

The rest of my day is busy and I hardly get any break. I get to home at lunch and as soon as I hit my bed I'm out.

I don't work for the next two days, and then I have my Boards. Alyssa and I are flying together on Thursday to Boston Massachusetts.

That's where our test will be held. Every resident has to take the Boards to become an attending.
