After hours

Chapter 20

It is almost Christmas. I am starting to show so it was only a matter of time before there was something in Doctors Inside about me.

"Hey, are we doing anything for Christmas with the rest of your family?" I ask Jacob who is sitting on the couch.

"Uh, probably not. I want it to be just us."

"Are we getting each other gifts?"

"I already got you something, but it's pretty small. You don't have to get me anything."

"Well if you got me something, now I have to get you something. Speaking of, we have to go get some things for the girls."

"They won't even remember this."

"It's still there first Christmas."

"Okay let's go."

We went to mall and got some toys and clothes for the girls. We didn't get too much because they already had every toy you could imagine.

December 4th

"Come on Alyssa! Get into the Christmas spirit!" I say putting reindeer ears on her head at work.

"I'd rather drink tequila." She replies tearing them off.

"Well I can't drink tequila. So you're going to get into the Christmas spirit."

She says nothing, just pouts.

I hear the sound of pagers going off around me.

Then both of ours go off.

911 ER.

"Oh god, what happened?"

We both race to the elevators along with six other doctors. This must me big.

"Alright there was a major car crash on 369. A total of fourteen injured, on their way, and six dead on the scene. I need all hands on deck. Let's move people!" The head of trauma barks.

I give Alyssa a worried look.

"Alright we have a open head wound! Stevens go!"

I rush to the paramedics.

"36 year old male. Trauma to the head. We bandaged it as well as we could, but it's still bleeding through. Part of the skull is cracked. Couldn't tell how bad."

"Okay let's get this bandage off."

Oh god.

The skin is torn off and you can see the huge crack going down the side of his skull. His brain is swelling so bad I can see it. We'll loss him within minutes of we don't get the swelling to stop.

"Page Montgomery now! And book an OR he needs surgery immediately."

We wheel him to the OR and Dr. Montgomery is already there.

"Alright let's move people." She says and begins to cut away.

The monitor starts beeping faster.

I see his brain swell and bust through the crack in his skull.

He flatlines.

He's gone.

"Time of death 22:05."

Christmas Eve

We read the girls 'How The Grinch Stole Christmas' and were about to watch the movie. They fell asleep before we could finish it.

"I can't move, will you grab them?" He asks me. They are both asleep in the crooks of his arms.

I laugh and pick up Nikki, carful not to wake her. Jacob slowly moves out from under Scarlett and we put them to bed.

I wash my face and we turn on the tv. Of course there was something about us.

"Evangelina West pregnant again? Source says that she's almost three months. Her and her hubby looked very cute last week shopping for their girls. I'm sure that these past few months have been very hard in their family. Angela West, Jacob's mother died recently. On top of Jacob's cancer and Evangelina's new pregnancy, I bet they've had their hands full. Well that's all for this week. Happy holidays!"

"Ugh," I sigh collapsing on the bed. Jacob pulls me towards him kissing me firmly.

"We have to go to sleep or Santa won't come."

"I think Santa can wait."

We can hear the girls laughing at each other on the baby monitor.

"I think they're awake." I say with a laugh.

"I'll go get the camera."

They rip open their presents and make a huge mess. I took some really cute pictures of them with huge smiles on their faces.

"Okay here, you're turn." Jacob says handing me a small box.

I open it and inside is a charm bracelet. There is the date of our wedding, baby shoes, and a emerald stone for the twins birthday, a pair of ballet shoes, a science beaker, an infinity sign, and the leukemia ribbon.

I immediately start crying.

"Do you like it?"

"I love it." I lean forward and kiss him, long and hard.

He wipes my tears laughing at me. "Oh shut up, I'm emotional."

"Open your present."

After Jacob opens his gift, his eyes filled with gleam.

"Evi, you remembered. H-how did you get this?"

"I know some people." I wink.

His gift was an antique camera back in the day. It is the rarest one to find. There is only 6 more in the world. Jacob's dream was being a photographer. The first and only time he told me this, is when we high school.

"Evi, this is so thoughtful"

"Anything for you, love."

Everything was suddenly quiet. I look over and the girls were asleep on the floor.

"Well I guess that means they had a good Christmas?"

"Ha I guess so."

New year's eve

Jacob is taking me out for New Years. I put on my tight gold sequin dress that my stomach pokes out of. I did dramatic eye makeup and bold red lipstick.

Grabbing my Louboutins I go into the living room.

"Hey- woah, babe you look beautiful."

"Thank you," I say with a smile. I am finally his height with my heels so I could kiss him without having to reach on my tip toes.

"Bye guys, have fun!" Alyssa says. She was keeping the kids.

"So why do we have to leave so early?"

"You'll see."

Wait why are we at the airport?

"Okay, where are you taking me?" We both get out of the car."

"We are taking my private jet to Italy."

"what?!" I say stopping in my tracks.

"It's time for that honeymoon we never had." He says with a smirk.
