I sighed as Caleb walked away from us. I knew that he'd be hurt, but I hadn't expected a reaction like that. I glanced at Ethan and he shrugged at me. Ethan took my hand and squeezed it as Robyn silently left the room.

"I think we are in trouble." I whispered.

"I don't care, we just got married, this is a happy time. We shouldn't let people drag us down." he stated.

"We'd better start our shifts." he added.

I nodded and made my way into resus.

"Congrats Mrs Hardy!" Zoe squealed when she saw me.

"Robyn told you?" I frowned.

"Yeah." she said as she pulled me into a hug.

She quickly let go of me as the resus doors burst open.

"This is Sally Green, she was a victim in a house fire, she doesn't have burns but is dyspnoeic due to smoke inhalation. She's been put on twice maintenance fluids and given oxygen at the scene." Ian told us.

"Okay thanks Ian, number three." Zoe said as she pointed.

"Hi Sally, I'm Doctor Hanna and this is Emma." Zoe introduced us.

Zoe listened to her heart rate as I quickly applied the ECG pads.

"Okay so she'll need a chest x-ray to check for pulmonary edema." she told me.

☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆

I handed Zoe Sally's x-rays and waited for her to speak.

"There is some soot in your lungs." she told Sally.

"What does that mean?" she asked nervously.

"It means you're at risk from a pulmonary edema, which is a serious condition." she answered.

"Emma can you go to reception and arrange for Sally to be transferred to intensive care please?" Zoe asked me.

I nodded and quickly walked to reception.

"Oh hi." I frowned as I stood face to face with an elderly lady behind the reception desk.

"Where are Louise and Noel?" I asked.
"Louise is on her lunch and Noel has gone up north for a month to visit his daughter." she smiled.

"So I'm covering for him." she added.

"Oh right, okay." I said.

"I'm Susan." she smiled.

"Emma." I replied.

"Lovely to meet you." she smiled.

I smiled back, she seemed like a sweet lady.

"I need you to transfer this patient to intensive care for me." I said as I handed her the notes.

"Sure, no problem." she said warmly.

"Congratulations Emma." I heard Connie's voice from behind me.

I turned slowly to face her.

"I hear you're now a married woman." she added.

I nodded slowly, not really sure what to say. She was so intimidating that she always made me nervous.

"I'll order you a new name badge." she said, smiling slightly as she walked away.

I sighed and glanced at Susan.

"You're married?" she asked quietly.

"Yeah, a couple of weeks ago." I said proudly.

She smiled.

"Is he a good guy?" she asked.

"Yeah he's the best." I told her.

"I'm a lucky girl." I added.

I glanced at Caleb as he walked past me.

"Cal..." I called.

I sighed as he ignored me and carried on walking.

"That's not him is it?" Susan chuckled.
I sighed and shook my head.

"Are you married?" I asked her, trying to distract myself from the guilt I was feeling for hurting Caleb.

"Yeah, I've been married for a long time." she chuckled.

"How long?" I asked.

"Twenty one years." she stated.

"Wow!" I exclaimed.

She laughed.

"Okay that's the transfer arranged." she stated as she typed on the computer.

"Thanks." I called as I walked back to resus.
