"Okay I'm just going to take some blood from you, please keep very still." I told Andrea.
"Thanks.....Emma." she said after glancing down at my name badge.
"No problem, it's my job." I smiled.
"This may hurt a little but there's nothing to worry about." I told her.
"Just a little!" she said sarcastically as I took the sample.
"Sorry." I said, surprised at her sharp tone. I couldn't understand why she was suddenly being so stern with me, I'd been nothing but nice to her.
"Dr Adams will be through to see you once the results are back." I told her.
She ignored me, sighed and picked up her book. I watched her as she began to read it. I really couldn't understand her change in attitude. When I'd first met her she'd seemed kind and caring but now she was rude and disinterested.
"Emma I've found Cal he's in the staff room." Ethan said as he entered the cubicle.
"Well that's great Ethan, but what's your point?" I frowned in confusion.
"We can tell him." he said quietly before walking away.
"Who's Cal?" Andrea piped up.
"My brother in law." I said quietly.
"Why do you and that Doctor need to speak to him?" she pressed.
"It's kinda private." I told her.
I frowned at her as she watched me closely. No matter how much time I spent with her, I just couldn't read her.
"I'll take these bloods to the lab." I said uncomfortably as I quickly left the cubicle.
After I'd completed the forms and sent the bloods up to the lab, I quickly wandered into the staff room. I could feel my hands shaking as I saw Caleb glance up at me. It was horrible not knowing how he would react, he already hated me. I didn't want to hurt him anymore, but he had to know. I glanced nervously at Ethan who smiled at me encouragingly.
"We need to speak to you about something." I started nervously.
"Yeah Ethan said you have something to say." he said dismissively.
"Please don't take it badly." I pleaded.
"Take what badly." he sighed.
I took a deep breath and said the words that I was scared to say.
"I'm pregnant." I blurted.
"You're going to be an uncle." Ethan added happily.
I watched Caleb closely as he turned pale, the shock evident on his face.
"Am I the last to know that as well?" he said sarcastically, as he regained his composure.
"No we told you first!" I exclaimed.
"Looks like things are working out for you then." he said as he looked at me intensely.
He looked away eventually and quickly left the room. My eyes darted to Ethan as I heard him sigh.
"At least it's over with now." he said quietly.
"The America idea is looking more and more tempting." I sighed.
"Tell me about it." he muttered as he walked past me to resume his shift.
I knew how Ethan was feeling because I felt the same. Caleb was our family, he was supposed to support our decisions and be happy for us. It was obvious that once again Ethan was disappointed in him. I could understand that Caleb was hurt, he said he was in love with me after all, but that didn't give him the right to hold it against us. It was getting unfair now. I'd give anything to run away with Ethan. Maybe a fresh start was exactly what we needed.
As I left the staff room, I walked past Andrea's cubicle. I frowned as I saw Caleb talking to her. She laughed and smiled at him. I rolled my eyes, she'd been rude to me, yet here she was flirting with Caleb. I swallowed the lump that was rising in my throat as something stirred in my stomach that I hadn't felt before. I am not jealous I told myself over and over as I walked away.
