I threw my bag into my locker angrily.
"Calm down." Ethan chuckled.
"I didn't sleep a wink last night." I admitted.
"That's not an excuse to take it out on the locker." he chuckled.
"It hasn't done anything to you." he grinned.
Despite my bad mood, I smiled slightly. He always knew how to cheer me up.
"Are you free?!" Louise exclaimed as she burst into the staff room.
I glanced up and saw that she was talking to Ethan.
"Depends what you want me for?" he grinned.
"Someone knocked into Susan in reception and has hurt her wrist. It looks bad and I can't find a doctor." she stated.
"I'll come and have a look." he said as he followed her.
Ethan's POV
I sighed as I walked towards the woman I now knew to be Emma's mother. As much as I wanted to avoid her, my duty as a doctor came first.
"This way." I said quietly as I gestured for her to follow me.
I led her to a cubicle and watched as she perched on the bed.
"I need to examine your hand." I said bluntly.
She watched me closely as I inspected her hand.
"Ouch!" she exclaimed and pulled her hand away.
"Sorry." I sighed.
"It looks like it's just a bad sprain, but I'll organise an x-ray just to make sure." I told her.
"Thanks Ethan." she smiled.
"It's Dr Hardy." I said bluntly.
"I'm your mother in law." she said sarcastically.
I glared at her, completely speechless.
"How's Emma doing?" she asked.
"Fine." I snapped.
"I'm glad you're taking care of her." she smiled.
"I'll fetch you some analgesia." I said dismissively as I walked away.
I was seething as I walked away from her. I badly wanted to tell her to leave me and Emma alone. If she stayed away from us, then I wouldn't have to see how much Emma was hurting or the sadness behind her eyes. I quickly carried the Codeine vial back to her cubicle.
"I'm going to give you an injection of Codeine, it should help with the pain. It might make you feel a bit drowsy, but that's to be expected." I told her.
"Thanks." she smiled as I administered the injection.
I ignored her and filled in her notes.
"Ethan I need your help in resus!" Connie called.
"I have to go." I said as I quickly slipped the vial into my pocket and walked to resus.

Emma's POV
I smiled slightly as Ethan climbed into our car beside me.
"You ready to go home?" I asked him.
"Yeah." he said quietly.
"You okay?" I asked him as I drove.
"It's just been a busy day, I barely had time to think." he stated.
"Thank god it's the weekend." I smiled.
"Yep." he answered.
"I've been having a think about some things." I sighed.
"About your Mum?" he asked.
I nodded slowly.
"And?" he prompted.
"I think I would like to meet with her at the weekend, I have a lot of questions for her." I admitted.
"Maybe once you get some answers you'll know what you want to do." he pointed out.
"Exactly." I agreed.

I curled up on the sofa next to Ethan and rested against his chest. I felt comforted by his arm tightly around my waist.
"I want you to know that I'm here to support you about this stuff with your Mum." he said gently.
"I know you are." I smiled up at him.
"I just don't want her to hurt you." he stated.
"Talking through things with her will hurt, but I think it's the right thing to do." I admitted.
"Yeah maybe." he sighed and kissed my forehead gently.
I jumped as I heard a knock at the door. I glanced at Ethan and saw that he was frowning at me.
"Who could that be, it's almost midnight?!" I exclaimed as I switched off the movie.
"I don't know." he frowned.
I stood up slowly.
"Wait, I'll go." he said quickly.
"Stay here." he added.
I watched as he left the room and walked into the hall. I heard the door open and then....silence. A few moments passed and I walked into the hall and peered over Ethan's shoulder. I gasped as I saw a policeman standing on the doorstep.
