Ethan's POV

As I watched her walk upstairs, I sighed and ran my hand through my hair. I had no idea what to say to her. How did I comfort her, when there was nothing that could be said to fix things. She'd lost her mother, I knew better than anyone how it felt. She'd only just got her mother back and now she was gone again. She hadn't even had the chance to speak to her, to ask all the questions she'd needed to ask. Now she would never be able too.

I climbed the stairs and knocked on the bedroom door.

"Emma can I come in?" I asked.

"Yep." she said quietly.

I opened the door and saw that she was curled up on the bed. I laid down beside her and gently brushed the hair out of her face. As I glanced at her face I saw that she had been crying.

"It's okay Emma." I told her.

"No it's not." she said as she wiped her eyes.

"I meant it's okay to be upset." I sighed.

"I barely even knew her." she said thoughtfully.

"But she was still your Mum." I said gently.

"Technically, but she was never there for us." she stated.

"I need to call Stuart." she added as she quickly pulled her phone out of her pocket.

"Emma..." I protested.

She needed some time to get her head around things before telling people. But she wouldn't listen to me. I watched her closely as she made the call.

Emma's POV

I knew Ethan didn't want me to call Stuart, but I had too. I had to find some answers and maybe Stuart was the one to give them to me.

"Hey Stuart, it's Emma." I said when he answered.

"Hey Emma, what's up?" he asked.

"I'm just returning your message." I said quietly.

"Yeah I wanted to give you the heads up about Mum, but I'd imagine she's already been to see you by now." he told me.

"Yeah she has." I admitted.

"And?" he prompted.

"Why does she want to get in touch with us now?" I asked him.

"Apparently she left our father for another man and when she got remarried it became clear that he didn't want us around anymore, so she put us in care." he told me.

"What?" I whispered.

"But she missed us and has been looking for us for a while." he said.

"Does her husband know?" I asked.

"I don't think so, I'd imagine he wouldn't be happy about it." he stated.

"I guess not." I sighed.

"How do you feel about it?" he asked.

"I don't know." I admitted.

"But I have to tell you something." I started.

"What?" he asked.

"She...." I started.

"She..." I tried again, but couldn't get the words out.

"Give me the phone." Ethan whispered.

I sighed and slowly handed the phone to him.

"Hey Stuart, it's Ethan." I heard him say.

"I'm really sorry, but the police came to our house. They said that Susan has died." he said gently.

"We don't know how." he said.

I tuned the conversation out, everything suddenly seemed real. I hugged my pillow as tears flowed down my cheeks. She may not have been a good Mum, but she was the only one I had. Not only was I hurting because of her death, but also the fact that she had chosen a man over her children.

I heard Ethan hang up and felt his eyes on me.

"Is he okay?" I asked.

"Yeah I think so." he whispered.

I wriggled into his arms and sighed as he held me tightly.

"I am really sorry." he whispered.
