Natasha declared and then realized that the sound of cars suddenly stopped, which could mean that she had miscalculated the timing, and maybe, instead of killing Oliver, she should use those precious minutes to escape with Sara into the forest on the ranch.
Even knowing there was a little chance of not being found, since Sara, given her age, wouldn't stay quiet and could cry or talk at any moment, attracting attention, but at least in the forest, the tactical team would have to spread out to find them, and by moving ahead, she could react to this hunt and eliminate her "hunters" one by one, or two by two, even with Sara.
Too risky. Natasha thought, considering the fact that she was with Sara the entire time, and in any unforeseen event, she could end up getting hit. Natasha was genuinely concerned now. She snuck close to the window, and the lace curtain allowed her to glance at the movement outside the house. But she had to be cautious; a tactical team could be using weapons and special binoculars that, by spotting her shadow, would know she was there and shoot.
No. They want Sara, and me dead is useless. They won't shoot to kill unless they realize it's just me alone here now, but thanks to this curtain, they can't be sure if I'm with her. Natasha considered, then looked out the window through the curtain. She only saw an old sheriff's car, a typical one from this small county where the ranch was located. That alone explained such a deserted and remote place.
The sheriff got out of the car, wearing Ray-Ban sunglasses, a very classic hat, and an old rusty gun in the holster, indicating little use and, logically, his inexperience with dangerous and agile targets. Besides that, despite his bulky body, his large belly was noticeable, indicating either a sedentary lifestyle or alcoholism. Maybe both. Natasha thought, then analyzed the officer accompanying the sheriff. He took longer to get out of the car, and despite his gun looking brand new , way too new, even shiny, he also didn't seem experienced with dangerous targets. Actually, not dangerous, nor any kind of target... The new gun and the shiny badge could only mean he was a rookie officer, freshly graduated, likely on his first mission ever, and they sent him right after the Black Widow.
How dare they send this little duo after me? This is offensive. Natasha thought, then realized the sheriff had a very arrogant look and also seemed extremely proud. Surely, Oliver had raised the alarm about her presence there, and the government discreetly issued an alert to all police stations to capture her, warning about her danger level. And even knowing that, this idiot decided to go ahead alone, not waiting for reinforcements just to show he was doing something important and by doing so, exposed himself to death and the rookie to the same danger.
At least the two of them represented a possible escape plan, if she killed them, she could use their weapons and the car to flee, But it wasn't smart to kill them; that would be another crime for her record and more ammunition for the state to prosecute her. One more vote in favor of losing custody of the kids. That cannot happen. But then, how to get rid of them?
Sara was tired of being alone upstairs. Besides, she was scared and soon started crying hysterically, and that gave Natasha an idea. She looked at the officers again and noticed that just Sara's crying had already made the rookie draw his gun, but due to his trembling hands, it fell to the ground. The sheriff just put his hand over his and gave him a good scolding, telling him to pull himself together and follow him toward the house. But it was clear he was scared too.
Thank you for being a crybaby, Sara. Natasha thought, then rushed upstairs, but she didn't let Sara see her too soon. She needed Sara to make even more of a scene. So Natasha went up slowly until Sara noticed her. Sara tried to walk but gave up and crawled instead, crying, toward the chest, stood up there, and reached out asking Natasha to pick her up, but Natasha didn't pick her up yet.
