The Long Game

Yaz and Patrick still sat there, staring at the sunset. Yaz stood up and just stared over the edge of the cliff, wiping her eyes.

"We will get home Yasmina." Patrick whispered standing up.

"Say it enough it'll be true. Right?" Yaz muttered walking back towards the hatch. They walked to see Mae and the others sitting in front of it, somberly.

"I am so sorry." Mae said as Yaz hugged herself. "I don't know what's going on here, but I swear I will get you home."

"No." Darius interjected causing Patrick to glare at him and Yaz to look down sadly. Something Sammy noticed. "We're not leaving. Look obviously this isn't what we wanted. But we can't quit now. Mantah Corp doesn't care if they're hurting dinosaurs, and Mae can't protect them all on her own. We have to stay and stop them. However long it takes."

"Well guys, it seems Darius has spoken." Patrick snarled causing the group to turn to him. Yaz looked at her boyfriend worriedly.

"What are you talking about?" Darius questioned.

"I'm talking about..." Patrick said only for Yaz to grab his arm, silencing him.

"Sure." Yaz whispered in a defeated tone, one that broke Patrick's heart. "Whatever you say D."

"Okay." Brooklyn said. "We'll go check on the feeders and make sure the BRADs didn't contaminate the food."

"Y'all..." Sammy said wrapping her arms around Patrick and Yaz. "Me, Yaz and Patrick are kinda beat. We're gonna head back to the cave."

"Sure." Brooklyn said with a smile.

"Once we're done, we'll meet up and figure out a game plan to save those Dinos." Yaz said as the others exited through the hatch. "Thanks Sam."

The trio entered the hatched and slowly walked through the Hallway, Patrick adorning a frustrated look concerning Sammy. Once they reached the cave, Yaz looked at him.

"I... I need rest..." Yaz whispered.

"Okay." Patrick said as she walked towards the bedroom leaving Sammy and Patrick in the kitchen. The boy opened the fridge and pulled out two water bottles. "Sammy... what do I do? I... I don't know how..."

"Just listen to her." Sammy said putting a hand on his shoulder. "Make her feel heard... supported."

Patrick nodded and walked into the bedroom to see Yaz lying on her back, staring at the ceiling. Patrick placed the waters down on the nightstand and sat next to her.

"I... I think I forgot how to sleep." Yaz whispered.

"When I used to have nightmares, I would always think about things that make me happy." Patrick said.

"What...what if I forgot that too?" Yaz asked quietly.

"That's how it always feels. Just think about home." Patrick said lying on his side facing her. "What do you miss? I'll start. I miss... showers. I miss playing piano. The Nature Documentaries me and my sister would watch..."

"I miss... cheeseburgers." Yaz whispered turning on her side to face her boyfriend. "Hotdogs or corn dogs."

Yaz suddenly yawned causing Patrick to smile.

"I miss watching my mom get ready for work..." Yaz said closing her eyes. "The dumb high-fives she gives me when I get home from school. Her kebabs... I... I miss."
