Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot and Prongs are all obvious nicknames when you consider their Animagus forms, but the Marauders actually came up with the nickname Moony before they worked out that Remus was a werewolf because he knew the cycle of the moon before ever picking up an Astronomy book.
