Sirius and Remus never had it easy, the 70's didn't exactly grant them the privilege of a discrimination free relationship, Sirius was breaking the law every month to protect Remus from himself, Remus was practically in hiding in the only place he could call home, no one can put it past them for being afraid.
But there's no saying they let that get them down for too long, the years they spent together were the best years of their lives, they knew perfectly well how hiding could damage a person so they joined forces, fed off one another's strength and picked each other up when they fell.
Sirius and Remus knew that it wasn't the fall that kills you, it's the landing so they enjoyed the fall, they laughed, they cried, they loved, they did it together, always together, until the very end. Every emotion shared was a memory made, an everlasting imprint on the mind that would create happy thoughts no matter the circumstances.
When Sirius was locked away in Azkaban it was the memories of Remus that clung on to most of his sanity, remembering his face as he concentrated on a piece of homework, or the light behind his eyes just as he broke into a fit of laughter. But memories of Remus also haunted him while locked away, he had nightmares of Remus facing full moons alone, aching to be surrounded once again by his best friends, the image of his contorted body ripping its way to wolf form without a friend to help, a hand to guide or a figure to care, protect and love for him even with his wounds.
When Sirius was locked away in Azkaban it was the memories of him that kept Remus sane, remembering the good times and the loving times and the hard times and all the times with Sirius because even in his darkest hours the glint in Sirius' eyes showed him the light. But memories of Sirius also haunted him while he was locked away, the look in his eyes as he had to say goodbye like it was his last every time he left during the war, never did they think they would ever have to reach a last time.
The years they spent together were the best years of their lives.
The years after were the worst.
