So they exclude themselves from any other activity as they write out and analyse each line of the song. Then Sirius hatches a plan, he's tired of James' constant pining over Lily and believes he has found a way to get James to admit his arrogance without realising it. Next time James saw Lily he would go up to her, look straight into her eyes and speak, with the utmost sincerity, " If I claim to be a wise man, Well, it surely means that I don't know."
Would you believe that this actually got James five minutes alone with Lily Evans? Five minutes and not one hex was involved. James believed the only charming done was done so on his own behalf via his 'powers of seduction'.
drewrunner came up with a headcanon based on Carry On My Wayward Son that was probably better than this but I can't remember what it was tbh so this is what we're going with.
