Sirius had a lot of respect for McGonagall and she knew it, but Sirius made sure he never showed it too much, he'd make snide comments and misbehave in class but he always did his homework and never had a bad word to say about her. McGonagall knew Sirius suffered with his parentage and accepting himself so she always made sure he felt completely comfortable within himself whenever she could do something about it.
