Realism

hello, I know I've suddenly appeared rather inactive, school sucks. Anyway, here's a little rant that I was going to put in my rant book but it relates quite a lot to Marauders Era and fanfiction in general so I thought I'd put it on here instead :)

I've been thinking about realism a lot recently, now, I like fanfictions as much as the next person and obviously they often go well off original story lines most of the time, but sometimes you do have to take historical importance into consideration, I'm going to use Wolfstar as an example because that's just how I roll.

As much as I love the idea of gender-queer Sirius or ace Remus, I can't help but question the fact that gender-queer/fluid wasn't a known thing back in the 70's and sexualities basically consisted of homosexual men, lesbian women and 'normal people'. I am not, however, saying that Sirius may not have conformed to gender binaries, he may well have painted his nails and taken pride in his hair, but the term gender-fluid would not have been recognised and even if it was something that was addressed it would have been described as mild gender dysphoria.

Another point I'd like to make (and I know I've done this in this book without thinking, don't attack me okay) is how open gay couples are sometimes represented in the Marauders Era, it often seems as though people like to believe they would happily be open about their relationships without a second thought and not receive any homophobic abuse at all. People would have been extremely homophobic back then and it is highly unlikely a couple would be very open with anyone other than those closest to them. I am not by any means saying that people in the 70's would not be open about being gay, I mean, look at Freddie Mercury for example, but they would definitely struggle coming to terms with their sexuality. When I wrote Sirius' Introduction I said that he was openly bisexual, I said this as he would have been the kind of person who wanted to be open from the day he met the people he would be spending the next 7 years with because he would want to know how his new found friends would feel about him before he got too attached and eventually got a bad reaction when he told them. Another reason Sirius would have been open about his sexuality would be to disgrace his family, he would do anything to rebel against pure-blood traditions, even if it meant possibly facing social discrimination. This also makes me think that Remus would not have been too open about being gay as he already faced enough discrimination for his lycanthropy without homophobic abuse on top. J K Rowling has added that Remus' lycanthropy was a metaphor for HIV but a lot of people have come to believe that in present day lycanthropy would be a metaphor for homosexuality which I really think defeats the point of the metaphor in the first place.

Let me know what you think about all of this in the comments, I'm honestly so interested in other peoples views, of course these are only my opinions but I would like to know whether you agree or disagree with me :)

Also, another question, does your country have a sexuality education association because I know Wales doesn't and I don't think there is one in the UK but I think that's something every country should have.
