Remus knew being at Hogwarts wouldn't be easy, he knew full moons would take all his energy but he had to hide it from his peers, he couldn't have them knowing or he would surely be expelled, he knew there would be people who would work out his secret in an instant if he let anything slip, so he put on a brave face and barred through it.
The first full moon after the Easter holidays of first year, however, took its toll on Remus, mentally if not physically. He left the Shrieking Shack less scathed than all other full moons he faced at Hogwarts so Madam Pomfrey sent him back to his dorm, explaining that he should tell his friends his mother was feeling better and that he should return to school. Remus, not wanting to cause a fuss, agreed to this but could hardly place one foot in front of the other, his bones ached, his head was spinning and the world seemed to be pushing against him, he would have been surprised to find he made it to the common room if he had enough energy to comprehend anything other than pain and exhaustion. In spite of himself, Remus collapsed next to the dying fire, unable to care what people would think as they headed to breakfast the next morning.
Remus remembered dropping next to the fire so he couldn't quite understand why his place of rest seemed cushioned and he could feel a blanket over him, as he opened his eyes, Remus could see the fireplace horizontally ahead of him through his blurred vision, he suddenly realised that he was lying on the sofa in the common room and made to get up before anyone found him like this, but before he could move he felt a gentle hand on his shoulder and froze in shock, someone had found him and would surely want to know what had happened, why he was there, he was in no state to be forming comprehensive answers to those questions, Remus began to panic.
That was when Sirius spoke, it was his hand on Remus' shoulder, of all the people that could have found him, it had to be Sirius Black. "Moony, hey, Remus calm down, it's just me." Remus managed to shake Sirius' hand off and sit up, he didn't know what to do, but it was Sirius who spoke again, "What's going on Remus? You can tell me you know."
Remus struggled to decide what to do "Sir-sirius, I-I-" he tripped over his words as his eyes filled with unceremonious tears, he made a bid to hide his face but was unsuccessful.
"Remus," Sirius began, his voice softer than Remus had ever heard, "it's okay, you don't have to tell me, I'm here when your ready okay? We should go to the dorm, there's no way James and Peter will be up yet." Remus relaxed slightly then felt himself tense up again remembering that James and Sirius told each other everything, soon the whole school would know about how little Lupin was crying like a baby in the arms of one of the only friends he'd ever had. Sirius, sensing this reaction, added, "We won't tell them about this, it's just our little secret, yeah?" Remus nodded and allowed Sirius to help him up, he still wasn't quite strong enough to support himself so unwillingly fell into Sirius, he felt Sirius' arms tighten around him. For a moment, Remus was embarrassed, then he realised that Sirius had now seen him at his most vulnerable but he didn't turn his back, he didn't ridicule him, he just supported him and that's more than Remus could ever ask for.
Remus allowed Sirius to support him up to the dorm room, managing to nudge the door open with his foot as not to let go of Remus, he didn't let go of him, in fact, until Remus was lying in bed, his eyes half closed, trying to thank Sirius when no words would come out. Sirius bent low to Remus' ear and whispered "Our secret, I promise." Before climbing back into his own bed.
Sirius never broke that promise or any promise there after.
That was the night Remus knew that he would always need Sirius Black.
