I wake up to a knock on the door. I nudge James and hop off the bed. I watch as James answers the door. A young woman in a maid suit comes in with a trolley full of breakfast items.
She smiles and leaves the cart. “Breakfast for the guest and his pet.”
The maid leaves and shuts the door behind her. I look at James and sniff around the food. Every type of breakfast food possible was there. And on the bottom shelf, there was a plate full of rare cooked meat.
James put my plate where I could eat and then he ate.
After we finished I sighed and looked at James. ‘So what are we suppose to do for the next four days till the meeting with the King?’
James smiled at me. ‘Scout out the castle of course. Wander around and pretend to be lost. Maybe find a map or at least get to know the place.’
James gets up and opens the door. ‘Ladies first.’
I smile mentally and walk out in to the hall and wait. James follows and shuts the door.
We walk all over the castle over an hour’s time. Not once did we see a single soul throughout that entire time. But as we were fixing to head back to the room we got lost.
James is studying the three hallways in front of us. Each identical to the one we just came from. James looks at me and shrugs. ‘You think you can smell us out?’
I shook my head no. ‘We have been up and down each of these hallways today. They are covered in our scent. Try calling for help.’
James sighs and looked around again. “Uh… anyone help?”
In a blink of an eye, a child appears next James. I recognize her as the little girl who has guided us around the castle before. “Dr. Dodd, are you lost?”
James smiled sheepishly. “Yes, I was amazed by the castle. I have never been in a building that is so large. But I think we have gotten lost. Snow doesn’t seem to be able to smell our way out of here either. Do you mind helping?”
The little girl shook her head. “Of course not. I am a servant of the King and helper to the guests. Where would you like to go?”
James thought for a minute. “Is there a private workout room? I would like to work with Snow’s agility without an audience.”
The little girl nodded and started walking down the left hall. We followed.
The little girl was silent but James decided to strike a conversation. “So, are you a vampire? My sense of smell isn’t the greatest these days. To many lab explosions have destroyed my since of smell.”
The little girl smiles and shows perfectly white fangs. At the same time she touches her eye and a colored contact comes away from her eye. I look and see the classical blood red. Her other eye is dirt brown from the contacts.
She puts the other contact back in and her smile disappears. “I am over 200 years old. My first thirty were very harsh. My mind matured but my body never did. It was difficult to live with until I got used to it. Since, I’ve used it to my advantage. There are very few vampire children though. We are hunted and killed most of the time. The rest get themselves discovered by humans during tantrums. Imagine a child acting the same way for twenty years before realizing that they are finally maturing mentally. Messy business. We caused the Salem witch trials believe it or not.”
James looked shocked but tried to hide it. “I’ve never meet one such as you. What made you join the King?”
The girl looked at him but shrugged. “He offered protection. The werewolves believe us to be weapons and not people. I disagree with the King on a lot but he offers the only protection so I can’t complain.”
