The morning light slipped through the thin curtains of the hospital room. Mae lay still on the bed, her body weak, her legs aching with every small movement. The bleeding had stopped, and the doctor had cleared her to go home.
Troy stood by her side, adjusting the strap of his watch. He looked uneasy, like a man torn between wanting to stay and knowing he had to leave.
"I have to go now, Mae. I'm going abroad." Troy said softly, his voice low but firm. "But I promise, I'll be back."
Mae turned her face to him, searching his eyes for something real, something to hold on to. All she saw was a promise carried by lips, not by the weight of his heart. She forced a faint smile. "Alright, Troy. Take care of yourself."
He leaned down, brushing his lips against her forehead, then walked out the door. The echo of his footsteps down the hallway faded, leaving Mae in silence.
By noon, she was discharged. With effort, she stepped into her shoes, each movement heavy, her body reminding her of the damage done. Walking was difficult, and she held onto the nurse's arm for support as they led her outside.
At home, Mae lowered herself onto her bed with a wince, the ache between her legs refusing to let her forget. She closed her eyes, exhaling a shaky breath.
"He won't come back," she whispered to herself, clutching the blanket. "Men like Troy never do. Like Arex, Bruce and .....John."
Two years, it had been two years after graduation, and their story had been nothing but fragments, scattered moments that never truly belonged to her. She had no reason to believe he would return.
Her thoughts drifted to the man who had rescued her days ago. His face came unbidden, sharp in her memory, the strength in his arms, the calm in his eyes, the way he had appeared when she needed him most.
"John...." she murmured, her voice trembling with both longing and confusion.
A tear slid down her cheek. She didn't know if fate would ever cross their paths again, or if he was already gone from her life forever. All she had were memories of Troy's promise that felt empty, and of John's presence that felt real.
Mae curled on her side, hugging herself. The silence of the room was suffocating, but in that silence, her heart whispered a truth she was not ready to say aloud: it was not Troy her soul longed for.
It was John....in the image of the man who helped her.
A week passed.......
Mae and the man who helped her found themselves constantly thinking about each other, wishing they could meet again.
One day, the man who had helped Mae went to attend a meeting for his company's new project. He entered the building and rode the elevator up to the 16th floor, where several contractors were gathering.
As soon as he pushed open the door to the conference room, his heart skipped a beat. Sitting inside was someone who instantly brought a smile to his face, it's Mae.
Mae turned her head toward the door, and her breath caught. She couldn't believe her eyes. The man she had been thinking about all week was standing right there.
"Hi! We meet again!" The man greeted warmly, walking straight toward her with a wide smile.
Mae froze in surprise. The man who had been living in her thoughts was suddenly in front of her.
"I wasn't able to introduce myself properly last time because I was in a hurry," he said as he extended his hand. "I'm Juan Marco Cortez, but you can call me Marco."
