THE PREPARATIONS started shortly after, with the lack of Steve's BMW and Jackie's car still at home, getting back into their neighborhood was more annoying than anything.
"I'm going to miss her," Steve sighed, pulling his shirt off as Jackie sorted through her own dresser until she found the jacket she was looking for. It was the same one from before—the one from the War Zone that she and Steve had bought together. From the corner of her eye, she could see her boyfriend pulling his on over a camo shirt.
She blinked. "What? Miss who?"
"The Beamer."
Sympathetically, Jackie met him across the room to pat his arm. "I'll miss her too."
Steve cleared his throat, grabbing the hand that was on him and taking it into his own. "How are you, um.. feeling?"
"Fine," Jackie replied, squinting at him. "In what regard are you referring to?"
"Telling everybody," he clarified. "I should've backed you up. I should've.."
"You did," she shrugged. "You helped me when it mattered. Though making me face Hopper's wrath on my own has earned you jail time."
"Jail time?" He repeated, dubiously. A small smile quirked at his lips. "Oh, no. Will I have to do community service?"
"Fine with that," Steve responded, looking a little too eager. "I'll owe you forever."
"Are you two almost ready?!" Max shouted from downstairs. The couple shared a look, then burst into a fit of giggles.
"They're probably doing it," Dustin was saying as they descended down the steps. He and Lucas had changed, too. No longer in casual attire and something more fit for an upcoming battle.
"Get your mind out of the gutter," Jackie scolded him, brushing past Lucas to go to the fridge. "Steve and I are in a holy relationship."
"Yep," Steve agreed. "Nothing sin-like happening here. No pre-marital sex."
"Gross," Max stated.
"Technically, it's not pre-marital sex if you never get married," Jackie mused, tossing a water bottle to each of the boys and taking in their blank stares. Steve shifted awkwardly on his feet at the mention of marriage—or the lack of—and Jackie raised a brow. "You guys not answering me is making this more weird."
