Imagine leaving Mirkwood after Thranduil is arranged to marry and returning a millennium later
Perhaps it was your good nature that had allowed you to selflessly walk away when your true love confessed to you that he was to wed another. With that nature came respect which had stilled you all those years ago when you heard the tragedy that had befallen the King. There had been nothing stopping you from returning home for many years now. The Elvenking was no longer tied in an arranged marriage, yet you could not find yourself heading to Mirkwood. In the back of your mind a thought lingered. One that was shaped in the form of a child. An elfling was always a symbol of love and Thranduil had had a son with his former wife. Even coming to terms with the idea that he had fallen in love with the other, you yourself could not stop loving him. You knew not if he still loved you.
Some nights when you found you could not rest your mind, you wished upon the stars that the Princeling was the only thing holding you back from returning to your beloved. If that had been so, you would have reconciled many years ago but not even elvish healing was able to erase the wounds you had endured a millennia ago when you set off to the Undying Lands.
The plan had been to reach the Immortal Lands but the only proof you had of the failed trek were claw marks, a blind eye, and the lives of the tortured elves who had accompanied you that fated day, in your hands. The scarring was enough to halt your footsteps. Surely the King could not remember his love for you looking how you did. You would not blame him. As far as Thranduil was concerned, you had reached the Undying Lands safely and that is how you wanted it to stay. You had not anticipated your carelessness to be your ticket home.
"The sun is going down, we should leave at nightfall. We cannot stay here any longer, it is dangerously close to Mirkwood's borders," one of your companions distracted you from your thoughts. You knew he was right. Coming close to the King's borders was risky. Some days you questioned if getting caught would be a bad thing, you would get to see the King one more time, but then you thought of Thranduil's reaction to your scars, and the elves you lead. The frightened souls who were scared of their own shadows, the ones who unsheathed their swords at the slightest movement, and you remembered that they were dangerous. It broke your heart but upon their request, you had pledged you would never allow them to return home. Yet even after everything, some held on to the hope of returning to Mirkwood and could not find themselves heading to the Undying Lands. Others were too afraid to try the trek again.
"You are right. Tell everyone to be ready by the time I come back," you replied, making up your mind.
"Where are you going?" he asked with concern.
"I am going for a walk," you answered him and made your way toward the forest.
"Do you not think you will be putting everyone at risk if you go in there?" he questioned.
"No one will be out patrolling with the sun setting," you answered. You had not counted on the fact that since you left, the forest had become more dangerous, and patrolling more frequent.
The last time you had treaded through the forest, you had been leaving the Elvenking's halls. You entered the greenery with cautioned steps and when you could no longer see your companions, a smile formed on your lips. Your heart thumped against your chest faster than usual and you thought it was because you were nervous about being back but the more you ventured inward, the faster your heart beat. The forest that once made you feel safe now made you feel uneasy. Your smile quickly slipped from your face. You knew the right thing to do was to return to camp but you could not find yourself turning back. Before you realized it, you were no longer on the path and had no way of knowing how to return. Now your heart felt as if it would burst from your chest.
