"Are the communists behind this?"
"No."
"So our government lied?"
"Our government is behind this!"

Robin and Eddie rowed as Nancy kept a watchful eye on the compass. Scarlett clutched the walkie in a white-knuckled grip. "Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, slow down." Nancy eyed the compass as she spoke. Scarlett instantly leaned over to look. Sure enough, the needle was going crazy. "Slow down, guys."
The rowers grunted with effort as they backpeddled slightly to stop the boat. Steve helped Robin pull her oar into the boat before everyone crowded around Nancy. "Woah," Steve breathed out.
The walkie in Scarlett's hands crackled, and her brother's voice came through. "Guys, what's going on? Come on, talk to me. What's going on?" Dustin shifted his weight, he bit his lip and did his best not to pace.
"Uh, the compass is..." Scarlett trailed off and pushed her glasses up her nose. She paused American Pie to hear herself think. "It's completely off and spinning now."
Back on shore, Blake lunged for the walkie. However, Dustin had known Blake for the better half of his life and instinctively held it out of her reach. The redhead glared down at Dustin. "They're probably above the gate," she huffed. Dustin mocked Blake, wagging his head before he relayed the information to the group on the boat, further annoying Blake.
"Now what?" Robin asked, eyeing the water suspiciously. "Is this like a bathtub, and are we the rubber duck?" She looked around for answers that no one had.
Taking it upon himself, Steve wrangled off his shoes and socks. "Steve, what are you doing?" Nancy demanded.
"Somebody's gotta go down and check this out," Steve replied matter-of-factly. "Unless one of you three can top being a Hawkins High swim co-captain," Steve knew very well none of them could top that. Scarlett had been a horrible swimmer before moving back to Hawkins, she nearly drowned in the sea once. "And a certified lifeguard for three years, then... It's gotta be me. No complaints, all right?" Steve stood up and reached down to peel off his yellow jumper. Scarlett eyed Steve's chest for a moment before recomposing herself, not the time or place.
The boat rocked furiously but didn't tip. "Hey, I'm not complaining." Eddie jerked his head quickly."I do not wanna go down there." Eddie grabbed a shopping bag with some cookies out of his coat. He shook the food out and wrapped the plastic bag around one of the torches. Scarlett quickly held out a hair tie that Eddie took with a small, nervous smile. The boy secured the torch and the bag before holding it out to Steve.
"Ugh. When'd Steve get so hairy?" Lucas asked, staring at the half-naked boy on the lake.
Dustin quirked a brow. "Right? I keep telling him he needs to tame that jungle, but he claims Scar digs it." He shivered a little in disgust, and Floyd scowled at the thought of his cousin and Steve.
