In the regular world, the group of five stripped off their shoes, leaving them on their socks. Erica, Max, Lucas and Floyd carried blue lanterns inside the house whilst Scarlett held a torch. The four went their separate ways. Erica and Floyd stalked around downstairs, Lucas and Scarlett on the second floor, and Max went to the attic by herself. Both Max and Scarlett had fully rewound their tapes before setting foot inside the creaking building. Lucas had a Walkman clipped to his jeans with three tapes in his back pocket. Every Breath You Take by The Police for Lucas. Starman by David Bowie for Floyd. The Greatest Love of All by Whitney Houston for Erica.
They padded around in silence. Noises came with the occasional shift of a floorboard, or American Pie and Running Up That Hill drifting from Scarlett and Max's headphones.
Scarlett felt like a teenager again, standing in the Byers residence with cracked glasses and an axe. She looked away from her flashlight and to the walls. They appeared to be curling in around her, like long bony fingers of a hand trapping her in its hold. Scarlett looked away from the walls and continued on, willing Vecna to trigger her damned light. At any point, any of them could die, and Scarlett was powerless to stop it. Sure, she could distract Vecna, but not the demogorgons, demobats or demodogs that might start chasing the others. But if Vecna had noticed Scarlett entering the Upside Down, their whole plan could fall apart.
Blue light flooded Scarlett's vision as Erica and Floyd walked up to her. Erica held up a notepad. They had found Vecna. The first part of their plan was a go. Floyd walked on to round up Max and Lucas as the two girls headed back to Erica's lantern on the first floor.
Within moments, they were gathered around the blue beacon.
Erica scribbled on her notepad and held it up for all to see. It read 'phase one?'
Lucas and Scarlett nodded solemnly. Floyd adjusted the grip on his lantern and looked through his curls at Max. His stomach grumbled, but if he ate a bite, he'd just puke it back out. Already bile tickled his throat. He rubbed his arm, grateful he had a hoodie on since it provided some warmth against the chill of the Creel house.
